    • CRYSTAL FALLS - Kristine Elizabeth Wentela Van Abel, 59, of Crystal Falls passed away on Sunday, May 1, 2011, at her home.

      Kristine was born on June 11, 1951, in Hancock, daughter of the late Uno and Elsie (Tammela) Wentela. She was a graduate of L'Anse High School and went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Northern Michigan University. Kristine worked as an executive secretary for the Michigan Education Association.

      She married David Van Abel on Jan. 6, 1973, at St. Henry's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nisula, and he preceded her in death on July 20, 2004. Kristine was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.

      She is survived by her sons, Adam Paul Wentela Van Abel and Ryan David Wentela Van Abel of Crystal Falls; brothers, Lyle (Patricia) Wentela of Hawaii, Robert Wentela of Alston, Bruce (Marcia) Wentela of Marquette, and John (Debbie) Wentela of Minnesota; sisters, Mary (Pete) Giacoletto of Hancock, Cecelia (Dennis) Shortslef of New York and Sylvia (Ed Fugenschuh) Wentela of Pelkie. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

      Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.

      The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. Stephen Cowen will officiate.

      Burial will be in the Alston Township Cemetery.
