    • Marguerite was born 1787 Chippewa tribe. Married to Simon Champagne, he listed as a voyaguer, a man who carries fur pelts from traders to market. He rowed a long canoe loaded down in the treacherous waters of the Great Lakes, not sure if he got to the St. Lawrence. Her records and her families' show up in Catholic baptism records, and I GUESS that Simon and Marguerite had a Chippewa wedding, had children, then had a Catholic wedding after baptism since their recorded marriage date is long after children were born. Marguerite was born in Benton co.,Mississippi and migrated with her Chippewa tribe to Mackinac Island,Michigan. Simon was born in Quebec,Canada to Nicholas Champagne and Marie Bissonette in1782. Simon was a fur trader navigating up and down the St Lawrence River and selling his pelts along the way. He stayed a while when he reached Mackinac Island and married Margurite in a native american ceremony. The Catholic church would not recognize a marriage unless it was through the church thus a marriage date of 1822. He later brought another wife into the picture[Francois Bouvier]. Marguerite moved away with a daughter to Wisconsin and died at that place around 1850.
