  • Notes
    • Diane Jane Oberlander was born October 20, 1946, in Beulah, ND, a daughter of Art and Vera (Hermann) Oberlander. Diane was the first of eight children. She was baptized on November 17, 1946, at Kronthal Lutheran Church in Beulah and later confirmed on June 12, 1960, at the same church. She was educated at Beulah High, graduating in 1964 and then attended Wahpeton State School of Science in 1965 where she graduated with her LPN (licensed practical nurse). Diane worked at the Beulah Nursing Home from 1966-70. During that time, she married Donald Morast on January 27, 1967, with whom she had two children-Darrin and Dannell. Together they farmed north of Zap until they moved to Glendive in 1971. Diane worked at the Glendive Nursing Home from 1971-1973 when she went to work for Safeway in Glendive. She lost her first husband, Don, in March of 1977. The following year, she met Rodney Kilsdonk and they wed on October 14, 1978 and made their home in Savage. Together, they raised Rod's children, Laurie, Rodney and Duane, as well as Darrin and Dannell. They moved to Sidney in 1979 where she continued to work at the Sidney Safeway which later changed to IGA. She retired in 2011 due to her health. She loved to travel and visited Australia, the Bahamas, Mexico, Alaska, the coast, most recently Glacier Park, and of course, to see her kids and grandkids. Diane enjoyed spending time with family, playing cards and games, gardening, canning, baking, crocheting and quilting. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sidney and a volunteer for Relay for Life.
Always a do-er, never a complainer; Diane was the glue that held the family together. She created a warm environment that made everyone feel loved and welcomed. Diane made sure traditions were created and maintained to assure a sense of family and togetherness. She took in Rod's children and loved them as her own. She truly was a gift sent by God to save them, as well as Rod. She was accepting of faults while at the same time expecting the very best from each of us. She always had a plate of goodies at the ready for visitors and kind words of encouragement when we needed it. Diane was a strong-willed German woman that didn't back down in a game of Farkle-it didn't matter if you were a sibling or a grandchild! Family get-togethers always included her amazing cooking but if you were lucky she made a batch of her famous fleischkuechle! Diane modeled being a Christian to her friends and family and her faith was unending. She was a tremendous fighter and heaven has been made more beautiful by her presence.
Diane died on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family.
Diane is survived by her husband, Rodney; daughters, Laurie (Wayne) Owens, and Dannell Morast; sons, Rodney (Lisa) Kilsdonk, Duane (Darcee) Kilsdonk, and Darrin (Raquel) Morast; grandchildren, Tony (Linsey) Owens, Colton Owens, Brandi Owens, Kassidee (Colin) Rose, Scott (Michelle) Kilsdonk, Elisabeth Kilsdonk, Tessa Kilsdonk, Matreena (Travis) Revoir, Matthew Kilsdonk, Makaela Kilsdonk, Jade Morast, Zoey Morast, and Riley Simard; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Fred (Shirley) Oberlander, Glenn (Colleen) Oberlander , Neal Oberlander; sisters, Kathy Klein, Una (Jack) Reinhardt, and Nancy Galligher.
