Lois M. Kussow, Wrightstown, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2006, at the age of 99. She was born on January 17, 1907, in Defiance, OH, daughter to the late Emma Emelia (Ort) Gherke and William Earnst Gherke, the first of four sisters. The family moved to New London, WI, when Lois was a child. After graduating from Stevens Point Teacher College, she taught Home Economics at Wrightstown High School. She married Irvin William Kussow February 20, 1932, and embraced the life of a farmer's wife. In the '60s she returned to school at the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, earning a bachelor's degree in art and special education. She then taught Kindergarten and Special Education in Appleton and later in Manitowoc.
She was a woman of great strength and passion. She was well informed and articulate. She loved to teach and brought her interests in health, nutrition, music, and especially art to children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many others. She loved all aspects of art, working creatively with pastels, acrylics, watercolors and fiber art. As a member of the Wisconsin Artists Association, she loved attending workshops and participating in many exhibits. She was especially proud of her painting, "The Birches" for which she received an award.
She is survived by four sons: James (Trudy) Kussow, Noblesville, IN; Tom (Margie) Kussow, De Pere; Daniel (Carol) Kussow, Green Bay; and Paul Kussow, Kiel; a daughter, Rachel (Stephen) Daniels, Crystal, Maine; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Verna Kussow, De Pere.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin on October 2, 1998; her parents; three sisters: Helen Wallace, Alice Daly, and Esther Conger; a grandchild, Kathleen Kussow; and a great-grandchild, Jason Kussow.
