- Mary L. Close, age 93, of Appleton, passed away at Peabody ManorBirch Cottage on Thursday, June 25, 2015. Mary was born on September 19, 1921, in Atwater, Minnesota, to the late Phil J. and Evangeline C. (Lawson) Gallea. She married Kenneth J. Close, Sr. on October 10, 1942, in Jacksonville, Florida; he preceded her in death on April 22, 2001. Mary was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed knitting, playing games of cribbage and Farkle with friends, and was well known for her sketches and drawings.
Survivors include her daughter, Yvonne M. (Montgomery) Miller; her sons, Kenneth (Donna) Close, Jr., Philo M. (Amy) Close, Charles (Janice) Close, John (Dawn) Close, and Henry (Gail) Close; her 12 grandchildren; her 20 great grandchildren; and her great great granddaughter. She is further survived by her sister-in-law, June Close and her cousin, Ruth Wells. Mary was preceded in death by her sons, David and Joseph; her step-brother Howard Dunbar, her step-mother Blanche Gallea, and her sister Donna Baer.
Funeral services for Mary will be at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, June 29, 2015, at WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, 537 N. Superior Street, Appleton, with Fr. Donald Zuleger officiating. Friends may call directly at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton.
