      Heriditary Lord High Constable He succeeded his father as Sheriff of Gloucester. On King Stephen's accession he supported the King's party, however in 1139 he defected to Matilda, by whom he was created Earl of Hereford, 1143. He was excommunicated by the Bishop of Hereford as the result of a land dispute.
