- Wilfird J. "Bill" Coenen, 77, Appleton, died Thursday, April 28, 2011, at Appleton Medical Center with his family at his side. Bill was born in Little Chute, on Oct. 15, 1933, to the late Peter G. and Laura (Hietpas) Coenen. He graduated with the Class of 1951 from St. John High School in Little Chute, where he was President of his class. In 1953, Bill was united in marriage to Doris Noffke. In 1987, he married Annette Strebe, who preceded him in death in 2005.
Bill was self-employed most of his life as a farmer, truck driver, small manufacturer and salesman. He was able to fix or build just about anything and "Billy-rig" (a term fondly used by his children) just about everything else. He was a member of the Dale, Medina and Readfield Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus and the Dale Community Club. He loved gardening, country music and ice cream.
He will be missed by his nine children, Christine (James) Machamer, Waupaca; Joseph (Jane) Coenen, Kaukauna; Richard (Judie) Coenen, Rockford, Ill.; Barbara (Donald) Nieland, Fremont; Robert (Lori) Coenen, Elcho; John (Angie) Coenen, Dale; Suzanne (Paul) Shoberg, Larsen; James (Margret) Coenen, Appleton; and Katherine (James) Fitzgerald, Cinncinnati, Ohio; 23 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and six siblings, Laverne (Richard) McCarthy, Alice (Richard) Van De Hey, Raymond (Margaret) Coenen, Norman (Rose) Coenen, Lloyd (Julie) Coenen and Marilyn Van Dyke. He is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Irvan Coenen; and wife, Annette.
A Memorial Service will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 5, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 1810 N. Mc Donald St., Appleton. Friends may visit the family on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel and directly at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will take place at Highland Memorial Park, Appleton.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the friendly staff at Rennes Health Care Center, 8th floor staff at Appleton Medical Center and Father Gerald Falk, for the compassionate care shown to Bill.
