- Formerly of Appleton, Walter Mayer passed away Friday, August 27, 2010, at the Shawano Medical Center. Walter was born in Neenah on April 15, 1914, son of the late Peter and Ottelia (Katz) Mayer. In August of 1938, he married the former Violet Zak of Appleton; Violet preceded him in death in December of 1995. Walter held many jobs over the years, but will be remembered by most for being the caretaker of a private estate in Illinois. He enjoyed being outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. Walter was also a talented woodcrafter, and enjoyed making specialty items for family and friends. Most of all, he loved to put a smile on the face of another.
He is survived by four children: Shirley Slomski of Mackville; Beverely (Craig) Lobermier of Spring Hill, Florida; Marvin (Joyce) Meyer of Neenah; and Jack (Nancy) Mayer of Appleton. There are also thirty-four grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include a son-in-law: Norbert Berghuis of Kaukauna; two sisters-in-law: Pat (James) Murphy and Jean Weber, both of Appleton; and a brother-in-law: Lindberg Zak of Appleton.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, children: Joy Berghuis and Douglas Hoag; a son-in-law: Alvin Slomski; four sisters, three brothers and three grandsons.
A funeral service for Walter will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 30, 2010, at the Wichmann Funeral Home, Tri County Chapel, with Deacon Jim Dennison officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday morning from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service.
