  • Notes
    • Born NE-KIK-O-QUA to fur-trapper David Rankin and Chippewa mother WE-AW-WE-NING. Likely born about 1788 in a village on the Peshtigo River in the area of present day Peshtigo, Marinette County, Wisconsin.
She must have been a young teenager when she became the common law wife of Louis Charles Grignon about 1801 with whom she had two daughters. Theresa left Grignon about 1807 and married John Lawe that year. Theresa had 6 daughters and 2 sons with Lawe.
Daughter of David Rankin: "David Rankin was a fur-trader operating out of Mackinac. The records show that he had a 1778 license from Quebec for two canoes of trade-goods. When he wintered on the Peshtigo River, he had a daughter, Theresa, whose Indian name is NE KIK O QUA, with a Chippewa Indian woman named WE AW WE NING. Theresa had children with Louis Grignon, then became the wife of John Lawe. Her children drew payments as Menominee mixed-bloods and it is said that she was the niece of Margurite Roy{Roiux} and the grand-daughter of WAU BE NO KIEW and ACH A BA ME (ASH WAU BO MAY]. She was born around 1788 and was unique in that she preserved the Indian customs, wearing Chippewa dress and spoke the language whenever possible. John Lawe put in claims, in 1838, for Chippewa mixed-blood payments for her children."
