    • Ruth Myse, 96, of Fredericksburg, passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital, where she had been in hospice care for several weeks.

Those who knew Ruth Myse were charmed by her good manners, wit and Midwestern practicality. Those who loved her were also blessed by her generous spirit and unconditional love.

Ruth was married for 42 years to Daryal Arnold Myse, who died in 1993.

Ruth and "Dee" Myse made their home in Arlington, where he was an attorney who specialized in cases presented before the Federal Communications Commission. During the 1940s, Ruth worked as the administrative assistant to the head of the Internal Revenue Service.

When she married Daryal Myse in 1951, she became mother to his only child, Robert Newell Myse. Bob Myse will be forever grateful to the woman who raised him. Bob's wife, Laura King Myse, had an especially close relationship with her mother-in-law.

Ruth Myse also leaves three granddaughters and their families: Suzanne and Ray Melinsky; Jennifer and David Richardson of Stafford County; Kendra and Daniel Kennedy of Haymarket; and the mother of her granddaughters, Sheryl Winkler, also of Haymarket. She is survived by eight great-grandchildren: Stephanie Martin, Ariana and Anton James Melinsky; Kyle, Ryan and Julia Richardson; and Ella and Aiden Kennedy.

Born in 1913, Ruth Myse was the youngest child of Sandy and Augusta Brown of Minneapolis. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Stephen Brown; and two sisters, Lucille Anderson Johnson and Ellen Steelman.

She is survived by many relatives with whom she corresponded regularly, including a niece and four nephews and their children and grandchildren.

Ruth is mourned by her goddaughter, Joan Anderson Growe and her partner, Thomas W. Moore, of Minneapolis; Bill Anderson and his wife, Sharon, of Rohnert Park, Calif.; Chaz Brown of Minneapolis; Robert Hart and his wife, Susan, of Montclair; and Gordon Myse and his wife, June, of Appleton, Wis.

In any life, there are those who are related by special bond. A child of Ruth's heart was her great-niece, Colleen Growe, of New York City. The lives of Colleen, her husband, Julian Triago, and their daughter, Sophia, were enriched by their many interactions with Aunt Ruth.

In addition, Ruth Myse will be missed by the residents and staff at Chancellor's Village retirement community in Fredericksburg, most particularly by her friend and dining companion, Marj McArtor.

When Ruth moved to Fredericksburg in 1999, she met Gina Wright of Spotsylvania County. Gina became not only Ruth's caregiver, but also her friend, companion, secretary and shopping partner. Gina's husband, Addam, and daughter, Kirsten, considered Ruth their surrogate grandmother.

Recently, Ruth came to rely on the friendship and daily care provided by Karen Wanner, also of Spotsylvania. It was Karen's cheerful cooperation and thoughtful care that made independent life possible for Ruth. Karen is adopting Ruth's beloved cat, Lexie.
