"Rusty"
De Pere
Roy "Rusty" Vercauteren, age 83, died on Christmas Eve, 2002, with his family by his side. He was born May 24, 1919 in De Pere to the late John and Nellie (Klueskens) Vercauteren. Rusty graduated from Nicolet High School and joined the United States Army after high school, serving in the Calvary in World War II. On July 6, 1942 he married the former Rita Doran. She preceded him in death in 1993. Rusty worked in the lumber business his entire life. Up until his retirement he was owner of Freedom Lumber Company in Freedom, Wisconsin. In his younger years, Rusty enjoyed playing golf, playing cards, traveling, and meeting the guys every morning for breakfast at the Main St. Restaurant in De Pere. He was an avid Packer fan all of his life and was a life time member of Our Lady of Lourdes in De Pere.
Survivors include four sons: Steve (Mary) Vercauteren, Green Bay Paul (Cindy) Vercauteren, De Pere David (Cindi) Vercauteren, De Pere Denny (Lisa) Vercauteren, Chicago three daughters: Barb (Ed) Steel, Bernardsville, New Jersey Mary Ann (Doug) Longlais, De Pere Peggy (Jim) Berns, De Pere 16 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters: Margaret Hockers and Alice Patterson two brothers-in-law: Roy and and Joe Doran as well as two sisters-in-law: Katie Beno and Monie Liebmann and a special friend, Iris Diamond.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marcia Clemens in 1987 and ten brothers and sisters.
Friends may call at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, De Pere from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday. Parish prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, De Pere. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The family extends a special thank you to Dad's caregivers, Mary, Sandy, and Ellen, as well as Unity Hospice.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, contributions may be made to the American Porphyria Foundation for research efforts in a disease affecting his granddaughter Wendy Ver Voort. The foundation's address is PO box 22712, Houston, TX 77227.
