    • Lives to Remember: Ron Reetz gave his all to his job and volunteer work

      By Doug Zellmer

      Of The Northwestern

Ron Reetz dedicated much of his life to helping those in need.

The 80-year-old Oshkosh resident, who died Dec. 22, is fondly remembered for
his dedication to his job with the Winnebago County Department of Social
Services and for his volunteer work.

Reetz was deputy director of the county's social services department
starting in 1970 and held that position until his retirement in 1989,
according to his obituary. Oshkosh resident John Spanbauer worked with Reetz
at social services and said he enjoyed the experience.

"Ron was a good guy. I liked working with him," said Spanbauer, who is
retired. "He was very laid back. I don't think I saw him get real angry."

Spanbauer said he also had the opportunity to do volunteer work with Reetz
with the American Red Cross in Oshkosh after both had retired.

Norm Whitford, retired director of the Winnebago County Department of Social
Services, said he had the "good fortune" of working with Reetz for a number
      of years.

"Ron was a good co-worker and a friend. He had a nice sense of humor and was
a very pleasant person to work with," said Whitford, who lives near Pine
River. "Ron liked the outdoors. He and I did a lot of rabbit and bird
      hunting."

Reetz was one of the original founders of the Big Brothers Program of
Winnebago County, serving as its president in 1970, according to his
      obituary.

Ed Smith of Oshkosh said he did volunteer work for Big Brothers, Big Sisters
and the Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh and believes that's when he became
      acquainted with Reetz.

"Ron was always a calm influence and was always able to look at the bigger picture and I admired him a great deal," said Smith. "He gave freely of himself. He always seemed to give his very best."
