- Rita Collett Spiering
(August 21, 1912 - April 13, 2009)
Rita Collette Spiering, 96, a resident of the Forest Grove community, died Monday afternoon, April 13, 2009 at her home.
Rosary service will be said at 10:30 AM on Friday, April 17, 2009 at the St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church; 39135 NW Harrington Rd. in Roy.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 Am on Friday, April 17, 2009 at the St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Roy.
Rite of Christian Burial and vault interment will take place immediately following the Funeral Mass to be held at the St Francis Catholic Cemetery in Roy, OR.
Family and friends are invited to attend a reception following the burial to be held at the St Francis Catholic Grade School.
Rita was born on August 21, 1912 in Verboort, Oregon. She was the youngest of 13 children born to Theodore and Dinah (Smits) Vandehey. She was raised on the family farm in Verboort and attended the Visitation Grade School in Verboort through the 8th grade.
She was united in marriage to Lawrence Spiering on November 9th, 1932 in Verboort, OR.
Following their marriage they stayed in a home near Banks for one winter before moving to their farm on Greenville road in Roy, OR. They were living on the farm when Lawrence died on March 17, 1990. Rita continued living in Roy until 1993 when she moved to Forest Grove, OR.
Rita was first and foremost a mother to her five children and a loving wife to her husband. She was a homemaker but also helped her husband out in the fields on their farm. She knew the value of a dollar and enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking bread once a week. She also played cards, enjoyed needlework and sewing. Her and her husband traveled abroad including Ireland, Spain, Europe and Canada. Rita was an active member of the St Francis Altar Society.
She is preceded in death by her husband, 12 siblings, and her daughter, Joann Peters.
Survivors include her children and their spouses; Duane and Coralee Spiering of Banks, OR, Ronald and Deborah Spiering of Banks, OR, Allen and Margo Spiering of Banks, OR, Sharon Wood-Rackemann and her husband Rick Rackemann both of Coto De Caza, Ca., a son-in-law; Paul Peters of Forest Grove, OR, 18 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
The family suggests donation be placed in Rita's name to St. Francis Church; 39135 NW Harrington Rd.Banks, OR 97106.
