    • Richmond, VA - Richard Max Bauer, born April 30, 1928 in Appleton, WI, died on Friday June 1, 2018. At the time of his death, Mr. Bauer was a resident of Elmcroft Senior Living Facility in Richmond VA. Richard "Dick" Bauer was born and raised in Appleton, Wisconsin, the second of five children of Max and Gladys Bauer. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Private First Class from 1946-1947, and in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant from 1950-1951. He and his wife to be, Mona Lois Jung of Menasha were members of the St. Mary High School class of 1946, and both went on to attend and graduate from Lawrence University, Appleton, WI.

      After graduating from Lawrence University, Dick joined American Can (Marathon Paper) Company in Neenah. Dick is credited with being integral to several patents associated with enhancing paperboard coatings thereby protecting said cartons from water or oil damage. Dick spent his entire career with Marathon and its successors American Can and James River Paper Company. He rose in the company to be the Vice President of Research and Development at American Can's/James River's Neenah Technical Center.

      After retiring, Dick and Mona moved to Salem, South Carolina where Dick enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to whom he was deeply devoted. He also earned his Master Electrician license and used that expertise to provide electrical work for Habitat for Humanity in Oconee County, South Carolina.

      Mr. Bauer was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Mona Lois Bauer (nee Jung), his second wife Maebur Jones (Asheville, NC) and two brothers, Frederick Bauer and Robert Bauer. He is survived by two sisters, Pauline Bauer Stein (Milwaukee, WI) and Sister Maxine Bauer, SSND (Milwaukee, WI); five children - Mark Bauer ( wife Margie Bauer) of Richmond, Virginia; Joanne Bauer (husband Tim Painter) of Chatham, Massachusetts; Sarah Bauer (husband Jeff Heimerman) of Menasha, Wisconsin; Richard Bauer Jr. of Greensboro, NC and Laura Bauer Beecy (husband Mark Beecy) of Reston, Virginia. He has 11 grandchildren: Stephanie Austin (Richmond, VA), Ashley Bauer (Richmond, VA), Benjamin Funk (Boston, MA), Addison Funk (Denver, CO), Kelly Vincent (Chicago, IL), Paul Heroman (Ashburn, VA), Max Heimerman (Alexandria, VA), Ensign Tess Heimerman (Pensacola, FL), Brooke Logan (Madison, WI), John Beecy (Reston, VA), and Sarah Beecy (Reston, VA), and nine great grandchildren.

      The family extends sincere gratitude to the staff of Heartland Village, Elmcroft Senior Living Center in Richmond, VA for the loving support and care they provided. A Celebration of Life will be held from 2- 5 pm on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at Vertigo 1894, 167 Main Street, Menasha, WI, 54952. In lieu of flowers the family asks that to honor Dick's memory you spend time with family, loved ones and those needing assistance.
