    • Ray E. Nelson, 73, of Crookston, MN, died early Tuesday morning, July 26, 2011, in the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home, after a long and courageous battle against cancer.

Ray was born in Euclid, MN on July 5, 1938, and was the son of Joe and Mabel (Brady) Nelson. He grew up in Crookston where he graduated from Central High School. On January 14, 1960 Ray was united in marriage to Joyce Brouillard at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston. He entered the U.S. Army on September 28, 1961 and served in Hawaii. Joyce was able to join him, and their son, Terry, was born while they were stationed there. Following his honorable discharge from the Army on September 9, 1963, the family returned to Crookston. Ray worked at Phillip's 66 until 1965 when he began employment as a custodian for the Crookston public schools. He spent a short time at the Eugene Field School and the rest of his thirty-four tenure was at Central High School. He retired in January of 1999. Ray will be very lovingly remembered for his kindness and gentle manner, and sadly missed by his wife, Joyce and son, Terry; and his family and many friends.
Ray leaves his beloved wife of fifty-one years, Joyce; his son, Terry of Crookston, MN; three brothers and three sisters: Ivan and Yvonne Nelson of Grand Forks, ND, twin brother, Roy Nelson of Gentilly, MN, Vern Nelson and his wife of North Carolina, Cheryl (Donald) Grove of Red Lake Falls, MN, Marilyn (Guy) Remme and Candace (Greg) Aamold of Grand Forks; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Gene. May God bless Ray's memory.

A private family service will be held for Ray E. Nelson with The Rev. Bill Reck, officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the Crookston Veterans Council, and burial will be in the Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston. The Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home is assisting with funeral arrangements.
