- Omer Anthony Vandehey, 90, a resident of the Banks community passed away on Thursday morning, July 30, 2015 at his home
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be said at 12:30 p.m. and Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 15, 2015 at St Edward Catholic Church in North Plains.
Family and frends are invited to attend a reception following the Mass held at the Parish Hall.
Omer was born on October 16, 1924 in Roy Oregon He was one of eight children born to George Phillip and Mary Philamina (Vandervelden) Vandehey. He was raised on the family farm in Roy and attended St Francis Catholic Grade School and later Banks Union High School graduating with the Class of 1938.
Omer volunteered for the US Army Air Corps when WWII started, he enrolled into college at Texas Tech and received a bachelor's degree in science in 1944. Omer served his country in the European and Pacific theaters as a flight engineer on a B-29. He was honorably discharged as a 2nd LT. in 1945.
He met his future wife, Evelyn Turner while at a dance, they soon began dating and were married on December 30, 1952 at St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Roy, OR. They made their home in North Plains and in 1969 they moved to Buxton. Evelyn passed away in 1996 Omer continued to live on the home place until his passing.
Omer started out as a farmer, attaining outstanding young farmer of the year in 1959 , raising vegetables and in North Plains, In 1969 he began logging and worked in the woods for Turner Logging until he retired to go to work for Tektronics finally retiring in 1986.
He enjoyed gold mining, gardening, canning and traveling. He loved to work on cars and build things with his hands. He was also a great dancer and enjoyed spending time with his family.
Omer is preceded in death by his loving wife Evelyn, two children; Brian and Tracy Vandehey, and six siblings.
He is survived by three children and their spouses; Cindy Vandehey and Ken parry both of Banks, Barry and Pam Vandehey of Banks, Danna Teresa Vandehey of Rainer, OR, his longtime caregiver and girlfriend; Julie Nelson of Banks, five grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren
