  • Notes
    • Joraine Sieber Groat was born on Good Friday, March 30, 1923, on a farm in the township of Deer Creek, Wisconsin. Her parents were John Sieber and Christina (Buss) Sieber. Joraine passed away at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital on April 30, 2020, at the age of 97, following a brief battle with coronavirus-19 and a bacterial infection. Joraine moved from Wisconsin to Chicago while in her early twenties, where she worked for the federal government. She married Allen Groat in 1945 and had three daughters: Mary; Susan; and Judith. She and Allen were married for 62 years and lived both in Chicago and Berwyn, Illinois. She moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan to live near her daughters when in her 90s, living first at American House, and more recently at Atria Senior Living on the Memory Care Unit. She was an intelligent, industrious woman who graduated from high school when just 17 years old, and held a responsible government position for many years. She was also a loving wife and mother who enjoyed bird watching; gardening; and cooking delicious food. She read for leisure and had a quirky sense of humor. Her husband Allen; her daughter Judith; and nine siblings predeceased her. She is survived by her daughters Mary and Susan; her youngest sister Marcella (Lawrence) Bohman, and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and with family at a later date due to the virus. Burial will take place in Illinois. Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church; the Alzheimer's Association; or Food Gatherers. Arrangements were made by Nie Funeral Home.
