- John Hugo Henry Toonen, 98, Milwaukee, is., died early Saturday morning in his home. His son, John was holding his hand. He was the son of John and Dora (nee Alears) Toonen of De Pere, Wis. Born Jan. 29, 1914. Moved to the Milwaukee area in 1944, was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Parish in Elm Grove, and later became a member of SS. Peter and Paul Parish on Milwaukee's East Side. John has a 35 year career with Allis Chalmers in West Allis, Wis., but his true life's work were his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and neighbors. He lived and died surrounded by love he created and cherished.
He is survived by his former wife, Louise (nee Panosh) Toonen from Manitowoc, Wis. They raised eight children; three sons, John, Milwaukee; Tom (Julie), Oconomowoc; and Paul of Milwaukee's East Side and his domestic partner, Jan Hill, who John resided with for 34 years; four daughters, Mary (Michael) Riley, Madison; Kathryn (Michael) Krupinski, Green Lake; Nora Toonen, Milwaukee; and Carol (Tom) Runte of Wauwatosa; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Toonen; three brothers, Peter, Linus and Robert; four sisters, Catherine, Loretta, Bonita and Gladys.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 8, after noon at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 2490 N. Cramer Street (962-2443) followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 2 p.m. with the Very Rev. Timothy Kitzke, officiating. Then to continue John's Life Celebration, there will be refreshments in the Church Community Room. In lieu of flowers, donations to Milwaukee County's Lake Park, Frederick Law Olmsted Poet's Walk, Bench Project appreciated.
