John B. Nugent passed away this morning at the home of his son, James C. Nugent. He was a veteran of the civil war and formerly postmaster at Menasha and High Cliff. The end was caused by pneumonia. He was eighty-one years of age on October 13 last. Mrs. Nugent suffered the loss of his sight a year ago and felt the misfortune deeply.
Surviving are the widow, Josephine Collins Nugent, seven children, two grandchildren, two great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Jane Hart of Phoenix, Ariz. The sons and daughters are James, John Jr., and Mrs. Belle Nugent Gross, all of this city; Emilla J. Nugent of Janesville, Mary J. Nugent of Oak Park, Ill., Charles H. Nugent of Steelton, Ontario, Can., and William H. Nugent of Wausau. Two other children preceded their father in death. Kitty Nugent who passed away at the age of nineteen, and Mrs. Alice Nugent Bleecker, who passed away five years ago.
John B. Nugent was born in Marysburg, Prince Edward Island, Can., Oct 13, 1834, the son of Henry B. and Jane Nugent, natives of Canada. His father was of Irish descent. When the deceased was five years old, his parents removed to upper Canada and resided in the vicinity of St. Claire river until he reached the age of sixteen. His mother died while on a visit to Marysburg, when he was not six years old. In 1850 he accompanied his father and stepmother to Michigan. Four years later he came to Wisconsin, settling a High Cliff, Calumet County, where John B. Nugent pursued the vocation of lumberman and farmer.
He enlisted in Company C, Third Wisconsin Infantry, April 30, 1861, being the first man to enlist from Calumet County, and served about fourteen months, received an honorable discharge on account of disabilities. January 1, 1864, he was married to Josephine Collins, of Menasha, a native of Washington, N. H., the daughter of Tristram and Emilla Collins. To this union were born the nine children named.
The funeral will be held at the family residence. It is expected that the Menasha post, GAR and the Island City chapter of Masons will attend in a body.
