- Jan Dirck Peters of Seelandt was baptized on 17 Dec 1614. He first married a woman named Lutgaris and later married Joanna Jenssen van Asten. From his first wife he had three children (Cornelis- 1643, Theodorus - 1645 and Henricus - 1647) and with his second wife, who he married near the end of 1649, he had at least four children. He was a brasseur, that is to a brewer. As were his ancestors, he was involved in city government. At the young age of 30, he already was President of the town council. The period in which he controlled Gemert (1645-1650) was amongst the most difficult in Gemert history. After the signing of the Peace of Munster on 30 Jan 1648, [putting an end to the Tachtigjarige (Eighty Years) War with Spain] Gemert was occupied by Staatse (or state) troops. Soon, government positions such as alderman would become occupied by people of the new Dutch Reformed (Protestant) religion. This is the reason why his name is not listed as a Gemert Council member after 1650. However, records seem to show Jan Dirck Peters van Seelant was the minister of finance in 1654. This position was the least desirable position to hold during this tumultuous time. Gemert was plundered during that year by an army gang and partially burned. But he had to do his job. . .
Our ancestor Jan Dirck Peters Van Seelandt came upon an unnatural death. In the death register of Gemert dated 23 Jan 1660, behind his name mentions "occissus est," meaning murdered.
