    • Pioneer Resident Dies This Morning
      James Van Heuklom, Sr. passes away today.
      Came to Appleton in 1849, Sixty-two years ago. Was oldest of four Generations of family -- served in Civil War
      James VanHeuklom, Sr., one of the very oldest settlers of Appleton, died this morning at about 10 o'clock at the family residence at 849 Summer Street. The deceased was 74 years of age, and death was due to general debility. He had been ill for two years.
      The deceased leaves his wife and nine children, thirty grandchildren and three great grandchildren, in all forty-two descendants. The children are: Otto, John, James, Mrs. J. Harmer, Mrs. George Barhyat, Mrs. Oliver Faville, mrs. Gustave Kranzusch, of this city; Mrs. Edward Schleicher, Milwaukee; Cornelius Van Heuklom, of Black Creek.
      mr. Van Heuklom's death breaks the chain of four generations of sons in the VanHeuklom family. The four generations were represented by the deceased, James VanHeuklom, his son, Otto, his grandson, Buron, of Milqukee, and his great grandson, John, son of Burton.
      James Van Heuklom had lived in Appleton sixty-two years, having come here from Holland in the year 1849, when about 11 years of age. In the year 1863, he answered President Lincoln's call for troops, enlisting from Appleton in Co. I, Thirty-second Wisconsin Infantry. June 4, 1865, he was transferred to Co. C, Sixteenth Wisconsin infantrty regiment and was mustered out of the United States service on July 12, 1865.
      The funeral for this pioneer resident will be held Friday afternoon. At 2 o'clock brief services will be held at the Van Heuklom residence on Summer street and at 2:30 o'clock at the Congregational church. Dr. John Faville will officiate. Interment will be made in Riverside cemetery.
