- Van Handel, Herman A.
Herman A. Van Handel, of Little Chute, age 80, died Tuesday, October 5, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Herman was born January 9, 1924, in Little Chute, son of the late Albert G. and Hattie M. (Van Groll) Van Handel. He married Delores A. Kurey on July 4, 1947, at St. Joseph Church, Appleton. Herman was a Navy Veteran who served in the South Pacific and Alaska during WWII. He was a proud member of the Jacob Coppus American Legion, Post #258, Little Chute and a life long member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Little Chute. Until his retirement, Herman was employed with Appleton Papers and has been a member of the Quarter-Century Club since 1986. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, gardening, watching the Packers and also the Brewers. He was especially proud of his family and home.
Herman is survived by his wife of 57 years, Delores five children: Joyce (Bill) Nagan, Freedom Judy Ver Voort and fiance Wayne Manteuffel, Little Chute JoAnn Van Handel, Little Chute Kathy (Greg) Bluma, Appleton Steve (Pam) Van Handel, Little Chute nine grandchildren: Cheri and Andy Nagan Sheila (Eric) Holmstrom Kaylin and Matthew Bluma Stephanie, Emily and Ashley Van Handel Jeff (Mar) Ver Voort four great grandchildren: Megan and Nicholas Ver Voort Luke and Lexie Holmstrom a brother, Sylvester Van Handel and special friend Stella sisters-in-law: Bea Van Handel Ardys Kurey Marilyn Schenck Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Herman was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Beverly Ver Voort six brothers: William (Marie), Joseph, Cornelius (Laura), Edward, Raymond (Marie) and Anthony Van Handel a sister, Rose (Clarence) Wolfinger a sister-in-law, Jean Van Handel two brothers-in-law: Orville and Donald Kurey mother and father-in-law, Michael and Katherine Kurey.
Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 9, 2004, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Little Chute, with Rev. Msgr. James Vanden Hogen officiating. Military rites will be held by the Jacob Coppus American Legion, Post # 258, Little Chute, following Mass. Friends may call at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, Little Chute. Jennifer O'Connell with Fox Cities Funeral Service is assisting the family.

- My Grandpa Herman Van Handel was born in 1924 in Little Chute. He had seven brothers and one sister. He went to St. John School and quit school after 8th grade to work on the family farm.
Herman joined the navy when he was 19 years old. He served during World War II.
In 1947, Herman married Delores Kurey. They lived in Little Chute and had five children, four girls and one boy, my dad, Steve.
Herman, my grandpa retired from the Appleton Papers. He died from pneumonia on October 5, 2004.
