September 20, 1976
STEVENS POINT-An Appleton woman was killed and three other persons, two of them passengers in her vehicle, were injured in a near head-on collision eight miles east of here shortly after 9:30 a.m. today.
Dead at the scene from massive internal injuries was Mrs. Joseph (Helen K.) Brouillard, 65, 11 Willow Court. In satisfactory condition at St. Michael's Hospital here were her two passengers, Hilda Kitzinger, 72, with head, arm and leg injuries, and Mary Loessel, 82, with head and possible internal injuries. Both women reside at 715 S. Story St., Appleton.
The second driver, James E. Hawkins, 39, Brooklyn Center, Minn., was transferred to Wausau North Hospital for emergency surgery. He sustained severe head and internal injuries and was in serious condition.
Mrs. Brouillard, who suffered massive internal injuries, was pinned in her car. The other two women had been in the back seat.
According to the Portage County Sheriff's Department, Mrs. Brouillard and her passengers were en route to Tomahawk to visit Mrs. Brouillard's sister. They were traveling east on U.S 10 and crossed over into the eastbound lane, colliding almost head-on with the Hawkins vehicle.
Police did not know why the Brouillard auto crossed over into the other lane.
Hawkins, a traveling salesman, was alone in his car.
