- Helen Marianna Vogt Peotter was born on September 23, 1915 in Appleton, WI and died on August 28, 1989 in Iola, WI. She was the fifth born of eleven children to Ida and Philipp Vogt. Helen graduated from the Milwaukee State Teachers College in Milwaukee, WI in 1939 with a major in Kindergarten and a minor in German and Physical Education. She enjoyed a 31 year long career of dedication as a kindergarten teacher. She taught from 1939 to 1944 in Walworth, WI and from 1944 to 1969 in Appleton, WI. On April 18, 1942 Helen was married to Sylvester H. Peotter in Racine, WI. Helen and Syl first built a house on Parkway Blvd. in Appleton and lived there from 1946 until 1969, when they moved to a smaller home on Gurholt Lake near Scandinavia, WI.
Helen enjoyed athletics (particularly tennis), dancing, nature, and singing. She was very knowledgeable about birds, flowers, and trees. Helens real talent was her self-trained soprano voice. When she began teaching in Appleton in the early 1940s, she joined the Zion Church choir. In the spring of 1943 Zion Lutheran Church Choir gave a special evening concert in which Helen participated as part of a solo quartet. She became active in the Lutheran Choral Society, working as a member of the Board of Directors and becaming President of the group in 1945 and 1946. After she moved to Scandinavia she became active in the Lutheran Choir there and directed the choir herself in the 1980s until 1988. In the community Helen offered her services as a vocal soloist at various affairs, and she participated musically in the Waupaca Arts Festivals Community Chorus from 1975 until 1984 when they performed large oratorios. She became an accomplished soloist, singing the National Anthem with the band at the Arts Festival.
In Scandinavia Helen was also active with the Scandinavian Lutheran Church's Womens Association. She served on various church committees and was a member of the churchs Executive Board on which she became the Reporting member and State Representative. Besides growing a large vegetable garden as well as flowers, she was a member of the Scandinavia garden Club, winning ribbons for her arrangements.
