- Harold E. Smits
Harold E. Smits, 88, 221 S. Huron St., De Pere, died Sunday afternoon, August 21,1994 at a local. hospital. The son ofthe late Frank Nicholas and Mary (Franc) Smits was born on September 16, 1905 in De Pere and lived here all of his life. He was a graduate of De Pere High School. On November 23, 1927 Harold and the former Mabel Gauthier were married at St. Joseph Catholic Church, De Pere by Father Bernard Pennings. Harold served for 30 years as a De Pere Police Officer, retiring as Captain on October 7,1967. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, De Pere. Survivors include his wife Mabel; three daughters and two sons·in·law, Veramae and Robert Peters, De Pere; Mary and James Powers, Neenah; Lynda Heuvelmans, De Pere; four sons and daughters·in-law, James H. and Mary Helen Smits, Falls Church, Va.; Gerald and Jill Smits, De Pere; Roy and Mary Lou Smits, Eau Claire; Thomas and Judy Smits, De Pere; 28 grandchildren; 29 great·grandchildren; one brother Lloyd Smits, Wausau; two sisters Agnes Smits, Mary and Clarence Pasterski, all of De Pere; a former daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Lee Smits, De Pere, nieces, nephews, special friends. He was preceded in death by a
grandson, Gerald John Smits Jr. one brother Emil Smits; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Frances Campbell, Dorothy and Walter Gauthier; one daughter.in-Iaw, Clara Mae Smits. Friends may call at Cotter Funeral Home, 860 N. Webster Ave, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Parish Prayer Service 7 p.m. On Wednesday friends may call at St. Mary Catholic Church, 121 S. Superior St., De Pere from 9:30 a.m. until service. Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 Wednesday at the church with Father John H. Harper officiating.
