- Eugene M. Onkels, 79, Kaukauna died on Friday, March 18, 2011, at Appleton Medical Center. He was born on Oct. 25, 1931, in Kaukauna, son of the late Oscar and Johanna (Verkuilen) Onkels. Eugene served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1952. On Aug. 4, 1953, Eugene married the former Eunice Arnoldussen at St. Mary Catholic Church in Kaukauna. The couple enjoyed 45 years of marriage together prior to her death on Jan. 4, 1999.
Eugene was a master carpenter and also worked at Appleton Papers in Combined Locks as a machine tender for 45 years. He was an avid Packers fan and enjoyed trips to the casino to play the poker machines. Eugene was a member of St. Katharine Drexel Parish at St. Mary Church.
He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, great-grandpa, brother and brother-in-law. He taught family values and was an excellent provider to his family.
Survivors include his children, Richard, Milwaukee, and his children, Karl and Kassie; Mike (Kathy), Kaukauna, and their children, Christy and Marcus; Ronnie (Laurie), Kenosha; Connie (Hale) Jahn, Portage, and their children, Tanya, Dawn and Jacquelyne; Linda (Doug) Klemp, Appleton, and their daughter, Amanda; Mary (Tom) Paulson, Kaukauna, and their children, Sarah, Nicholas and Erik; Angie Onkels, Texas, and her daughter, Jessica; ten great-grandchildren; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Robert (Jan) Onkels, Kaukauna; and Gerry Onkels, Appleton; and a sister, Jane Hacker, Sturgeon Bay. He is further survived by his wife's family, Marvin and Phyllis Van Deraa, Pat, Jan, Joe, Ervin and Donna, Dale and Mary, and Sr. Mary Arnoldussen, Marvin Hartzheim; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Donald, in 1976; a brother, Melvin "Bud"; and a brother-in-law, Ralph Hacker. Eugene is further preceded in death by his wife's family, John (Joyce) Arnoldussen, Gladys (Gus) Sacks, Bernice (Ben) Harris, Gerald, Clayton, Carol and Kathy Arnoldussen, Jenny Hartzheim, Theresa (Walter) Rosenthal and Frank Effa.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at ST. KATHARINE DREXEL PARISH at ST. MARY CHURCH, 119 W. 7th St., Kaukauna, with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating. Friends will be received on Monday, March 21, 2011, at BOETTCHER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 2401 Fieldcrest Dr., Kaukauna, from 5 to 8 p.m., with a parish prayer service at 8 p.m. concluding the evening. Friends may call again directly at church on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Full Military Rites will take place following services at church.
