- Ethelyn I. Choudoir, age 90, Beloit, WI, formerly of Menasha, died peacefully Palm Sunday, April 17th, at Premier Care Center, Beloit. Ethelyn was born in Mukwa (rural New London) on July 8, 1920, the youngest of 10 children of Herman and Alva (Gorges) Schimke. After graduation from New London High School, she attended cosmetology school in Chicago and worked as a beautician until her marriage to Gordon J. Choudoir on November 30, 1939, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Appleton. During their 59 year marriage they resided and made friends in Greenville, Hortonville, New London, Appleton, Marshfield, Beloit, and Menasha.
Ethelyn was an exceptional seamstress, sewing beautiful clothing for their four daughters. She loved gardening, animals, cooking, and baking and was known throughout the Midwest for her intricate and artistic cut out cookies made for weddings, anniversaries, and holidays. She was a loving and dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who always put her family first.
Ethelyn is survived by her five children: SanDee (Jim) Shea, Berlin, Wi; Susan (Charles) Spilman, Kalamazoo, MI; Patti (Bob) Harrer, Beloit; Pam (Jim) Talley, Beloit; and Gary Choudoir of Appleton; 12 grandchildren: Kelly (Eric) Barke, Steve (Sallie) Shea, Michelle (Ken) Kilgore, Jamie (Scott) Taylor, John (Kim) Buroker, Charlie Spilman, Christi (Mike) DeGeorge, Corrie (Sean) Byron, Angela Talley, Jean-Claud Choudoir, Francois Choudoir, and Rochelle Choudoir; 17 great-grandchildren who loved her dearly as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gordon, four sisters: Hattie, Meta, Clara, and Hilda; five brothers: Frederick, Irv, Ray, Wyman, and Clifford; numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and nephew Larry.
A Memorial Service for Ethelyn will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 21, at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel. Friends may visit at the funeral chapel on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will take place at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Appleton. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
