Engel, Elsie (Mrs. Joseph) "The Hug Lady"
It is not our choice of where or when. We know someday we'll meet again. God chose this time for us to part. Forever you'll be with us in our hearts.
Elsie (Foster) Engel, age 94, of Appleton, was born to eternal life on Saturday, July 29, 2006, at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Elsie was born April 13, 1912, in Marion, WI, the daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine ( Vanden Bloemen) Foster and has resided in the Fox Cities for most of her life. She was united in marriage to Joseph J. Engel on September 4, 1933, sharing nearly 58 years together before his death on September 9, 1991. Elsie loved to sing and enjoyed belonging to several area singing groups over the years including: Sacred Heart, St. Mary's, and St. Bernard Church choirs, Chaminade Chorus, Elks Ladies Chorus, and the Xavier Parents Teachers Chorus. She also was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church. Elsie will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, a devout Christian who prayed the rosary and listened to Mass everyday.
Survivors include her children and grandchildren: Darlene (George) Ebbens of Appleton and her children: Cyndee Cornelius; Laurie Hopkins Molly and Tyler Hopkins, and Mattie Zettel; Jeanine Dorow; Dan Dorow; Dawn Weir Mallory and Karley; Chris (Amy) Dorow Zachery, Joshua, Ashley, and Kaleb; Tom Dorow; Scott (Lisa) Dorow Travis Seehawer and Hunter Dorow; Quinten Netteshiem (special friend Karla); Steve (Jolene) Wochenske and Joy (Derek) Lewis Owen. James (Bobbie) Engel of Appleton and their children and grandchildren: Jeff (Celia) Engel Andy, Bradley and Kimberlea; Dan (Rhonda) Engel Nathan and Brandon; Julie (Duane) Zahn; Greg (Gisela) Engel Yvonne and Kirsten; Tony (Diane) Engel Shannon and Emily; Mary Jo Levknecht Ashley, Matt, and Alex; Tina (Brad) Burg Melissa and Mike; Todd Engel; Rob Engel (special friend Shaune); Joey Engel (deceased) Zack. Clifford (Patsy) Engel, Tn of Menasha, and his children and grandchildren: Katrina (Pat) Bruecker John, Britni, Angel, and Hunter; Carol (Russ) Schenk David and Matthew Bovee, and Amanda and Brandon Schenk; Troy Engel (special friend Angie Bevers) Jacob Engel and Isaac Bevers; Terry (Kristine) Engel Kayla, Gordon and Brianna Engel. Jerry (Shari) Engel of Darboy and their children and grandchildren: Debbie (Gary) Weyers Tim; Diane (Bill) Schommer Brianna, Billy, MacKenzie, Noah and Elijah; Dana Engel (fiance Eric Walters). Joene "Susie" (Randy) Lauerman of Appleton and their children and grandchildren: Jennifer (Craig) Laurin Jessica; Joyelle (Dan) Mead Bryce, Brett, and Brock; Kelli (Randy) Yeager Devin; Jodi (Dave) Neuber David, and baby to be; and Michael (Sarah) Zimmerman. James Beschta of Seattle (husband of Diane deceased) and their children and grandchildren: Tim Kyle, Cameron, and Colton; Mike (special friend Stacy); Doug (Margie) Beschta Mallory, Grant, Danica, and Justine; Shawn Beschta Kristopher, Jozi, Joshua, and Jadi. Also survived by former daughter-in-law Patricia Millay of Stockbridge; nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Elsie was preceded in death by a daughter Diane Beschta, granddaughter Darla Dorow, grandson Joey Engel, three brothers: Earl and Harry Foster and Sylvester Jansen; three sisters: Veronica Kloes, Joan Gresenz, and Lucille Verstegen.
The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday August 3rd at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1617 W. Pine St., Appleton, with Fr. Dennis Ryan officiating. Interment will take place at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and then directly at the church at the church from 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of the service. The parish wake service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in her name.
