- "Eloise Zirbel, 78, 914 Third St., De Pere died Friday June 24, 1994 at a local hospital. She was born June 21, 1916 in De Pere to her late parents Martin and Louise (Van Dyck) Smits. Eloise graduated from East De Pere High School in 1934. She married her husband Howard Smits (sic-Zirbel), August 18, 1941. She worked for Kraft for many years and for Larson Canning Co. for 10 years, retiring in 1978. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church on St. Norbert College campus. Eloise enjoyed spending time with her family at their cottage on Rolling Stone Lake.
Survivors include her husband Howard; her children, Barbara and Richard Hooyman, De Pere; Lynne Doherty, Green Bay; Dennis and Nancy Zirbel, Ashwaubenon; Debbie and Gordy Hutjens, 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, her brothers and sisters, Florence Van Ermen, DePere; Ossie and Olive Smits, Manistique, Mich.; Stella De Groot, De Pere; Margaret and Fabian Reince, Green Bay; Bud Smits, De Pere; and brother-in-law, Ray Schumerth, De Pere.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Joan Evearts, Angie Schumerth, and Marian Smits.
Friends may call at the Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N. Tenth St., De Pere, from 4 to 8 p.m. today. Funeral 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church on St. Norbert College campus with the Rev. Gery Meehan officiaing. Burial in the Mount Olivet Cemetery.
