      Services set for Earl W. Bates

      Funeral services for Earl W. Bates, former state president of the Loyal Order of Moose and a charter member of the Appleton American Legion Post, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Wichmann Funeral Home.

      Bates, 81, 1120 N. Durkee St., died Thursday after a brief illness. He was born in Appleton and had owned and operated a popcorn business in the city for 40 years.

      He was a member of the Pilgrim Degree, the highest honor bestowed on a member of the Moose. He also was a member of United Commercial Travelers and a World War I veteran.

      Survivors include a daughter and a son, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

      Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Saturday until the time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
