Deris participated in Appleton High School Athletic Booster Club for his son Jim and watched the Appleton East School musicals and Marching Band for his son Dave. Throughout his life, he enjoyed fishing in the Fox River and at his cottage on the shores of Legend Lake. When Margaret became severely ill he moved to Missouri City, Texas, and lived with his son David until her death. He met Norma in 2000 and they were married in 2001. In 2009, Deris, wanting to live his final years fishing and being by the water, moved with Norma to Tavares, Florida, where he died on Monday morning.
