    • Charles Mayer was born in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA on January 11, 1863, to Jacob and Mary Ann (Mathie) Mayer. He attended parochial schools in Pittsburgh until age 12, then worked as a clerk for the J.H. Borland & Company shoe store for three years. While working there, he contimued with studying at night school for the next three years until his family moved to Wausau in 1878.
      In 1879 he found employment with Mueller & Quandt, the pioneer shoe dealers of this area, and stayed with them for eleven years. He then went into business with his brother-in-law, Alfred Richard, under the name of Mayer & Richard, which he operated until 1895, when he bought out his relative. The company was soon renamed the G.B. Mayer Shoe Company, which he ran until 1919.
      Mr. Mayer was married in Appleton on January 11, 1887, to Mary Agnes Richard of Wausau, the sister of Reverend Theodore Richard, who built St. Mary's Catholic Church. Their marriage produced three children. Both of his sons were directly involved in the shoe business started by his father. The Mayers were devoted members of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was affiliated with the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Knights of Wisconsin and the Catholic Order of Forresters.
      Mr. Mayer was a director of the Marathon County Bank until it was taken over by the American National Bank. He was a director of the Wilson-Hurd Company, president of the Police and Fire Commission of the city of Wausau, and a valued member of the Chamber of Commerce.
      Charles B. Mayer died on April 6, 1930, in Wausau after suffering a stroke. He is buried in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Wausau, WI.
