    • Carmen Catherine Lucht Manawa Age 84, passed to her eternal reward, February 22, at Bornemann Nursing Home, Green Bay. She was born in the Town of Bovina, Outagamie County, December 17, 1916, to the late Leonard and Wilhelmina (Guerts) Van Straten . The 13th of 14 siblings, Carmen grew up on the family farm in the Shiocton area. She attended the Liberty Bell Country School and in 1935 graduated from Shiocton High School where she had lettered plus gone to state in forensic competition. Carmen attended the Outagamie Teachers College in Kaukauna and returned to her hometown to teach at Liberty Bell while attending summer school at Oshkosh State College and pitching professionally for the women's softball team in Oshkosh. A highlight of her life was pitching against Matty Horn. Carmen married William Julius Lucht of Marion, Wisconsin, September 4, 1940. William drowned May 20, 1956, while the couple were fishing. Left to raise six children by herself, Carmen farmed the Lucht's home farm in the Town on Union, Waupaca County, for 24 years.

Retired from farming, she moved to rural Manawa and then to the city of Manawa, first working as a nursing aid at the Manawa Nursing Home for 17 years and then at Trade Winds Industries in Manawa for five years. Carmen retired at the age of 75. Carmen enjoyed a good game of cards, a spin at the nickel machines, jaunts with her sisters and Sister Lisa, and attending her children's and grandchildren's special events.
