- Carmen Catherine Lucht Manawa Age 84, passed to her eternal reward, February 22, at Bornemann Nursing Home, Green Bay. She was born in the Town of Bovina, Outagamie County, December 17, 1916, to the late Leonard and Wilhelmina (Guerts) Van Straten . The 13th of 14 siblings, Carmen grew up on the family farm in the Shiocton area. She attended the Liberty Bell Country School and in 1935 graduated from Shiocton High School where she had lettered plus gone to state in forensic competition. Carmen attended the Outagamie Teachers College in Kaukauna and returned to her hometown to teach at Liberty Bell while attending summer school at Oshkosh State College and pitching professionally for the women's softball team in Oshkosh. A highlight of her life was pitching against Matty Horn. Carmen married William Julius Lucht of Marion, Wisconsin, September 4, 1940. William drowned May 20, 1956, while the couple were fishing. Left to raise six children by herself, Carmen farmed the Lucht's home farm in the Town on Union, Waupaca County, for 24 years.
Retired from farming, she moved to rural Manawa and then to the city of Manawa, first working as a nursing aid at the Manawa Nursing Home for 17 years and then at Trade Winds Industries in Manawa for five years. Carmen retired at the age of 75. Carmen enjoyed a good game of cards, a spin at the nickel machines, jaunts with her sisters and Sister Lisa, and attending her children's and grandchildren's special events. She loved family gatherings and had an intense interest in politics. A devout Catholic, Carmen was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manawa from 1948 until the time of her death. Carmen had strong faith, was a hard worker, and had a great sense of humor. She did not always have an easy life, but always found a way to celebrate it. Family meant everything to her. She had a big heart, one that included and blessed all who met her. Her advice was "Be compassionate to those less fortunate." She will always be remembered as a loving sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Survivors include her six children: Larry (Sandra) Lucht, Oconto Falls Sister Lisa Lucht (Patricia), Wrightstown Jack (Janice) Lucht, Manawa Lurana (Dennis) Nelson, Waupaca Carl (Kathleen) Lucht, Manawa and June (Frank, Jr.) Voss, Green Bay 13 grandchildren: Lisa Lucht (Don) Snyder, Lynda Lucht (Kenneth Kallies, Jr.), Brett (Stacy) Lucht, Trent Lucht and fiancee Tracy Aksamit, Rodney (Laurie) Lucht, Jeanine (Greg) Schmirler, Jason Nelson and friend Sarah Flood, Nieka Nelson and friend Tommy Wendt, Courtney (Brent) Erickson, Ashley Lucht and friend Brandon Erickson, Landon Lucht, Adam (Robin) Voss, and Jarad Voss 11 great- grandchildren: Tatum, Cameron, and Quinn Snyder Haylee Lucht-Kallies Natalie Lucht Amanda Lucht Joshua and MacKenzie Schmirler, Andrew and Ethan Voss and Aavery Frye three sisters: Agnes Brownson, Sister Lurana Marie (Rosa), and Erna (Elmer) Warning two brothers: Henry Van Straten and Robert (Dorothy) Van Straten several in-laws: Nona Van Straten , Ruth (Lucht) and Charles Bergman, Arlene (Lucht) Edward Fenney, and Hazel (Lucht) and Norman Tornow numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family and beloved family friend, Sister Peg Gabik.
Carmen was preceded in death by her husband, William Lucht one grandson, Brent Lucht five sisters: Anna and husband Harry Lettman, Francis and husband Willard Last, Martha, Grace and husband Mike Miller, Marie and husband Clair Poole three brothers: Aloysius and wife Cecelia Glen and first wife, Caroline, and second wife, Lilas, and Clark by several in-laws: Agnes (Henry) Van Straten , Clarence Brownson, Edna (Lucht) and Edwin Schoenrock, and Leonard and Evern Lucht her parents, grandparents, and father and mother-in-law. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, February 26, 2001 at St. Denis Catholic Church, Shiocton, Bishop Robert F. Morneau officiating. Burial will be in St. Denis Cemetery, Shiocton. Friends and relatives may call upon the family at the Cline-Hanson-Dahlke Funeral Home in Manawa from 4-8 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. A prayer service will be held 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. A memorial fund is being established. The family wished to thank the Bornemann Nursing Home and staff for the care and kindness given Carmen.
