- Arlene J. Calaway, 82, Freedom, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2011, at St. Paul's Nursing Home surrounded by her family. She was born on Oct. 14, 1928, to Joseph and Anna (Ebben) Ambrosius in De Pere. She married the love of her life, Bob Calaway, on May 17, 1949. Together they raised their happy, and sometimes rambunctious, 11 children.
Arlene and Bob first lived and farmed in the West De Pere area. In 1969, they moved to the Freedom area, where they continued to farm and raise their family on County Road EE. Mom was an inspiration to all in her baking, cooking and crafting skills as anyone who has received a Christmas tree skirt from her can attest to. Arlene was a devoted Christian and attended Mass regularly.
Arlene is survived by her 11 children, 40 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, Ralph (Gloria) and their children, Brian (Lori), Vicki (Paul) Leisgang and Robby (Jenna); Mike (Janet) and their children, Kim and Scott; Bill (Sandy) and their children, Bill, Jr., Kelly (Greg) Ohme and Jessie (Rich) Steenwyk; Barb Hooper and her children, Tom (Niki), Kevin (Kate) and Jenny; Jean (Greg) Van Handel and their children, Jamie (Shaena), Tami (Clay) Veldt, Craig (Leah), Nick (Megan), Charlie and Sara; Diane (Tom) Van Groll and their children, Mike (Indira), Joe, Carrie, Danny (Lizzie) and Stephani; Lisa (Ray) Bosshart and their children, Stephen and Katie; Nancy (Greg) Van Handel and their children, Christy, Dave, Stacie and Gary; Karen (Jeff) Ruffing and their children, Jeff, Jr., Joe, Ben and Molly; Peggy (Tim) Lehrer and their children, Kayla, Brandon, Ryan and Corin; Jeff (Vicky) and their children, Alex, Amber, Riley and Cassidy. Arlene is also survived by one sister, Nell Manders; and one brother, Jerry (Joanie) Ambrosius; as well as Bob's family, Patricia Goffard, Ann (Carl) Vander Linden, Jim (Dianne), Paul (Nancy), Grace, Sally and Bonnie Calaway. She is also survived by her close friend and cousin, Irene Smith.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, parents, brothers, sisters and in-laws, Ervin (Gladys) and Don (Helen) Ambrosius, Marion (Joe) Willems, Frances (Art) VandeHei, Gene Manders, Jane (Servanius) Vandenberg and Lorraine (Elmer) Green; as well as one son-in-law, Bill Van Handel. She was also, preceded in death by brother and sisters-in-law, Francis (Mary), Pete, Mark, Clara and Pat Calaway, Bob Goffard and Louise (Don) Miske.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Freedom, with Father Dave Hoffman officiating. Friends will be received on Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at the Boettcher Family Funeral Home, Kaukauna, from 4 to 8 p.m. with the parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will immediately follow the services at the parish cemetery. Boettcher Funeral Home, Kaukauna, is in charge of arrangements, 920-766-2099.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are being accepted for a Memorial at St. Paul's Home in Arlene's name.
Mom, your love showed us the way for everything we are today. You set us straight and set us free and that is what "Mom" means to me. We love you and will miss you always. Give Dad a hug from all of us.
