- Anthony "Tony" Smits was received in glory on July 12. He was born October 14, 1956 to Merlin Smits and
Junella (Brys). He graduated from Penning High School in 1975. Tony was committed to family, work, and
church. Tony fulfilled his dream of owning and operating A-1 Auto Upholstery for over 40 years. He always
said he enjoyed what he did and didn't feel like it was work. He loved to expand his artistic talents through
woodworking, wood carving, model trains, painting, and metal millwork. He enjoyed exploring the natural splendor God
has created through hiking and camping.
He is survived by the love of his life, Rita Fiala, whom he married 35 years ago this September 18.
Tony's greatest pride and joy were his children and being a "papa" to his grandchildren. His children, Mark (Jamie Joi
Crystal, fiance) Metz, Everesta (Alex) Hannon, Merlin (Melody) Smits, Joe (Heidi) Smits, and Rochelle (TJ) Smits-
Seemann. His grandchildren, Josiah and Desmond Smits and Zoey Smits-Seemann. Tony was the oldest of 5. He has
one sister, Debra (Thomas) Deer, along with three brothers, Martin (Sharon) Smits, Bryan (Lisa) Smits, and Rodney
(Ann Wheelz Brennan, significant other) Smits.

thanks to Unity hospice and the vast outpouring of love and support from family and friends.
