- Alex went off to serve his country during WWI, but to his parent's relief, the war ended just two days before he was scheduled to be shipped out. He was in the same unit with William Sachs and Fred Mueller. We suspect that Fred introduced his sister, Hattie, to Alex and later the two were married.
Alex and Hattie purchased the 40 acre farm with a house Y4 mile south of the Pine Castle (dance hall) on County C in Oneida Twp. after they married, where they raised their family. It was said that Alex must have been a really good farmer, knowing what he was doing, because he could produce the same number ofbushels on his 40 acres that the neighboring farm could on 80 acres.
All of their children attended the Golden Rule School, south of the farm. They must have picked up some of Alex's skills to make things from natural materials such as slide whistles, or birch bark canoes that Alex made, and the miniature farm set Wilfred made from clay soil. Alvin was quite an inventor in his own right, making toy trucks, etc.
Alex and Hattie raised Poland China pigs, ducks and chickens for extra income. Alex also enjoyed ice fishing with a friend. Later, Alex purchased the 37 acres north of the farm to the comer of Pine Castle (County C & EE) from his father.
Alex died on the farm on July 20, 1970, from a heart attack. Hattie sold the farm and moved in with Alvin until they found a nice little house in Little Chute for her. A couple years later she moved to a rest home in Appleton, where she lived until she passed away on August 25, 1977.
Wilfred died on January 8, 1944, at the age of 16, in a Green Bay Hospital, from gangrene after being in a farm accident.
Freida and Elmer Hansen were married in September 1947. Since Alvin and Margaret were married a few weeks later the two couples decided to take their honeymoons together, with a trip to Washington and Utah in Tony Van Boxtel's Chrysler.
Freida and Elmer stayed on the home farm for six years and then moved in with Burneskes until they purchased a home in Seymour. Elmer worked at a paper mill in Kimberly and Freida excelled at gardening and canning. She was quite proud of her flowers. Elmer and Freida would dress up as Santa and Mrs. Claus for many years to entertain children they knew and had many happy times partying with friends at home and up north. Elmer died in February 1998 after being at St. Paul's Home, Kaukauna, for several years. Freida died from cancer on December 4,2004.
