- David Derus, a personality bigger than life, passed away suddenly on December 8, 2015. He was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, on August 15, 1940, and named David Anthony Derus, after his dad.
David grew up in Kaukauna, WI, attended college to earn a degree in music and civil engineering. Directly after college, he joined the Navy and served on the USS Hancock, where he was severely injured during the Viet Nam War. He was medically discharged from and the Navy and spent a year rehabilitating in a Military Hospital in the Bay area. At this time, he was married to his first wife, Gina, who bore him his only child, Adam. David worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a design and construction engineer until 1990. During that time, he met and married LaJean Kuethe of Lodi, CA, and helped raise her three children, Derek, Jacqueline, and Jason. After retiring from the Postal Service, Dave and Jean bought a Mail Boxes, Etc. Store (currently Lodi Pack-n-Ship) which they have owned and operated for the last 20 years.
Through the store, we have met wonderful friends, including our manager, Lindsey Putman, who has been with us for 10 years, and has become a special part of our family. We thank all of you for sharing your lives and love with us. David is survived by his loving bride, LaJean Kuethe-Derus; son, Adam (Penny) Derus; step-sons, Derek and Jason Kuethe; stepdaughter, Jacqueline (Michael) Kuethe-Kramer; two lovely granddaughters, Ashley and Allison Kramer; one of four older sisters, Betty Lueck ; and mother-in-law, Dorothy Thompson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Mary; and father-in-law, LaVor Thompson.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, December 21st, at 6:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 1901 N. Lower Sacramento Road, Woodbridge with Chaplain Rich Manning officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lodi Salvation Army for the Lodi Elks Lodge. A memory book may be signed at www.lodifuneralhome.com.
