- Sister Carlotta Ullmer passed away Dec. 26, 2014, at the Motherhouse. She was born Elmyra Theresa Ullmer on October 9, 1919, in Green Bay to the late Charles and Katherine (Nachtwey) Ullmer. After attending St. John the Baptist School in Howard and St. Joseph Academy in Green Bay, she entered the convent in 1937 and professed her vows in 1940. Sister Carlotta celebrated her Diamond Jubilee in 1998 and her 75th Jubilee in 2013.
Sister Carlotta earned a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education at St. Norbert College in De Pere, a master's of Education in Guidance & Counseling at Marquette University in Milwaukee, and certification to tutor in Laubach Literacy Action from Literacy Green Bay.
She spent 47 years as a dedicated teacher and principal at St. Joseph, Madison; St. Mary, Bear Creek; SS. Peter and Paul, Institute; St. Joan of Arc, Goodman; St. Boniface, De Pere; All Saints, Denmark; Holy Angels, Darboy; and St. Matthew, St. Jude, and St. John the Baptist, Green Bay.
Upon retirement from classroom teaching Sister resided at the Motherhouse, was a member of the Motherhouse Team, a volunteer in Community service at the convent and was involved as a tutor for Adult English Language Learners for 27 years with Literacy Green Bay. In 2013, Sister Carlotta and Sister Jeanne Jarvis were honored by Literacy Green Bay for volunteering more than 20,000 hours over 30 years (see photos). She used to say she played scrabble daily with a dear friend to "ward off Alzheimers."
In Community, Sister Carlotta served as Peace and Justice Coordinator. Her concern for peace and justice prompted her to contact legislators, accompany the poor in court cases, and work with groups to provide food, clothing, housing and Christmas gifts for the needy.
