    • This story is about my grandpa, James Calmes. When he was a boy he lived on a farm on 30 acres of land. He was the oldest of 13 children. They had one Guernsey cow and it gave very rich milk. All the kids had to milk the cow by hand in the morning and at night. That milk gave two full pails every day and the kids couldn't drink that much, so with the extra milk, his mom made butter and ice cream. On the farm they had to raise their own chickens and gather eggs twice a day. In the fall they would eat the chickens. Then in the spring the baby chickens hatched and they started all over again with feeding all the chickens and gathering eggs each day.
My grandpa James had a huge garden. They grew beans, tomatoes, pickles, sweet corn, and potatoes. His mom would can all of the garden food for the winter months. With all the extra beans they would sell them at the canning factory for 10 cents a pail. They also raised a white-faced beef cow for meat.
After school they would go to their grandma's house and pick apples and their mom would make apple pies and applesauce with it. As you can see, they had plenty of food, but worked very hard to grow and make it themselves. McKenzie Calmes 2006
