- Alan L. Vander Putten, 73, of Green Bay, WI passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 4, 2017, at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center. He was born October 14, 1943 in Boston, MA., son of the late William and Marion (Gondeck) Vander Putten while his father was stationed in the Coast Guard.
After being honorably discharged from the US Army in 1966, he lived near the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco for the next 25 years. The family is sad to note that Alan did not live to see the 50th anniversary of the 'Summer of Love'. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in English Literature from San Francisco State University, and was an artist working in the style of Joseph Cornell. Alan's first medium was 2x2' fiberglass boxes into which he placed colorful handmade wooden figures, bric-a-brac, and other found elements. In 1987, he moved to Paradise, CA to continue developing his style. In 1990, Alan moved back to Green Bay, and his medium changed to intricate handmade wooden figures with multiple colors and elements, often set in dioramas. In 2000, Alan's work won an award in the Neville Public Museum's art competition, and his work titled 'Cats in a Can' was featured in a museum exhibition in 2001.
Survivors include one sister: Rita (Jim) Johnson of Eau Claire; one brother, Jim (Amanda) of Little Rock, AR; one nephew: Christian (Stephanie Shadick) Johnson of Minneapolis; one niece: Kjessia Johnson (Ben) Karol of Minneapolis, and grand nephews, Emmett and Elliott Karol.
Those we love are always with us - their laughter, their wisdom and their thoughtfulness are gifts of love that are ours to keep. The world has lost a kind and gentle soul.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center for all of the incredible kindness and loving care that was provided. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Spooner, Wi.
