    • Age 50, died unexpectedly on Thursday, August 2, 2001 while vacationing in Oconto County. John was born in Appleton on June 22, 1951, son of the late Gordon Vandenberg and Lucille (Sigl) Vandenberg of Little Chute. On May 10, 1974, John married the former Nancy DeGroot at Holy Name Church in Kimberly; she survives. In 1981, John and Nancy founded Northern Comfort Industries in Kaukauna. He was currently serving as the president of Rebuilding Together – Fox Valley Affiliate and was a member and former board member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (N.A.R.I.). John was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends. He was also a captain and twenty-five year member of the Town of Vandenbroek / Town of Kaukauna Fire and Rescue Department.

      Survivors include his wife: Nancy Vandenberg of Kaukauna; a daughter: Kristin Vandenberg of Oshkosh; two sons: Gordon “Bucky” Vandenberg of Seymour and Timothy “Ogre” Vandenberg of Kaukauna; his mother: Lucille Vandenberg of Little Chute; two brothers: Ron Vandenberg of Oklahoma and Tom (Ann) Vandenberg of Little Chutend their daughters Rebecca, Katie, and Laura; three sisters: Jane (Dennis) Hooyman of Kimberly and their daughters Melanie and Tricia; Jean (Tom) Langenhuizen of Kimberly and their daughter Karyn; Beth (Frank) Sprangers of Sherwood and their daughters Emily, Ashley, and Melissa. John is further survived by Nancy’s parents: Paul and Pat DeGroot of Kimberly; by Nancy’s brother: Jeff DeGroot of Appleton, and by his best friends Bill and Pat Vander Weyst.

      The funeral liturgy for John will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 6, 2001 at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street in Kaukauna with Fr. Jack Mullarkey officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2:00 PM Sunday and again Monday at the church after 10:00 AM. Visiting hours on Sunday will conclude with a parish prayer and scripture service at 5:00 PM.

      Gordy, Tim, and Kristin have only one term for their dad – Our Hero. We love you Dad.
