- Eugene Richard "Dick Van" Van Himbergen, 85, of Cheboygan, passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer's on Tuesday, December 22nd, at Hancock Haven, surrounded by his loving family.
Dick was born June 2, 1930, in Kimberly, Wisconsin, to Harry and Gertrude Van Himbergen. He was a 1948 graduate of Kimberly High School and then served in the Korean War where he received a Purple Heart. He went on to attend Marquette University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering on June 2, 1957. Upon graduation he married Margaret Mary Krueger on June 5, 1957 in Kimberly, WI. Dick was employed by Kimberly-Clark in Niagara, WI before moving his family to Cheboygan in 1969 to manage Werner Plumbing and Heating where he subsequently became a partner and then owner. Dick was a devout member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cheboygan, and a 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus. Dick was a long-time member of Cheboygan Golf & Country Club where he served as a Past President and also recorded two holes in one. Dick enjoyed spending his winters in Arizona, golfing, working around his yard to keep it in tip top shape, entertaining friends, and after his retirement, heading to Werner Plumbing & Heating to catch up with everyone. Dick touched many lives and will be truly missed by all.
Dick was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Peg Van Himbergen on October 17, 2014. He is survived by his children: Tony (Tammy) Van Himbergen of South Bend, IN, Dan Van Himbergen of Alpena, Dave (Ronda) Van Himbergen, Donna (Pat) McPhee, and Julie Van Himbergen, all of Cheboygan, and Jeannie (Joe) Vaccari of Dublin, OH. Grandchildren: Tyler (Andrea) Van Himbergen of South Bend, IN, Sarah Van Himbergen of Cookeville, TN, Ryan (Amy) McPhee of Aurora, OH, Maggie (Drew) Peklo of Belmont, MI, Nathan (Hannah) O'Grady and Kasey Lofgren of Cheboygan, Shiela Martin and Joseph, Anthony, and Auston Serra of Cheboygan, and Izzie, Addie and Ellie Vaccari of Dublin, OH; and two very special great-grandchildren, Emmitt McPhee and Maddox Van Himbergen. As the youngest of 10, he was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
A very special THANK YOU to the staff at Hancock Haven for the exceptional care, love and compassion given our father, to say he was spoiled rotten is a huge understatement.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 27, 2015, from 2:00pm-5:00pm at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home, 302 South Huron, Cheboygan. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 28, 2015 at 11:00am, with the family greeting friends beginning at 10:00am, St. Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church, 120 North D Street, Cheboygan, MI. Rev. Craig Haider will officiate, burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cheboygan.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bishop Baraga Catholic School or Hancock Haven Memorial Fund of Cheboygan.
