Merlin R. Verstegen 'Spike' 402 Frances St., Kaukauna, age 64, died unexpectedly at 3:15 a.m. Monday, January 4, 1988. He was born December 19, 1922, in Little Chute. He graduated from St. John High School in 1941. He was retired from Kimberly Clark Corporation in 1973 after working ther for 34 years. He was a 43 year member of the American Legion Post No. 258. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Betty; six sons and five daughters in-law; Brad Verstegen, at home; Cliff and Jo Verstegen, Greg and Carol Verstegen, Ken and Mary Verstegen, all of Little Chute; Mark and Kathy Verstegen, Madison; Mike and Jane Verstegen, Appleton; a daughter and son in-law, Julie and Scott Brann, Chicago; a brother and sister in-law, Tom and Artie Verstegen, Winneconne; two sisters and brother in-law, Barbara and Pete Lingl, Green Bay; and Grace Revior, Darboy; 13 grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard [Bill] and Lena; a sister, Margaret; and a brother, Jerry. The funeral service will be at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, January 6, 1988, from St. John Catholic Church, Little Chute, with Rev. Robert Lexa officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the Verkuilen Funeral Home, Little Chute, from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, and from 10:30 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the service. There will be an American Legion visitation at 7 p.m. Tuesday, and a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Military rites will follow the funeral mass.
