Roland F. Probst July 21, 1950 - August 8, 2023
Roland F. Probst July 21, 1950 - August 8, 2023
Roland “Rollie” F. Probst, age 73, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton, Wis. He was born July 21, 1950 to Alois and Rosemary (Dietzen) Probst. He shares his birthday with his great-nephew, Joseph Vosters, and he was very proud of that!

Rollie graduated from Kimberly High School in 1968 and Carroll College (now University) in 1972, where he was a member of the Delta Rho Upsilon fraternity. He worked most of his life in the food service industry. Rollie watched cooking shows for creative inspiration, but his family came to love the simple - yet delicious - Cowboy Casserole and Chicken Dijon dishes that he consistently made for gatherings. He also worked for Scanlan Jewelers and, most recently, Festival Foods.

Rollie enjoyed many things in life, including travel, reading, and time with his large family. He loved bringing his nieces and nephews (and their children) on adventures, whether to the Badlands or afternoons at the movies. Holiday gatherings were very important to him, and he wanted to make them important for others. Rollie was steadfast in his Christmas gift-giving to his nieces and nephews, even presenting them hand-made jewelry for their important life milestones, another one of his hobbies and talents.

The Catholic Faith was Rollie’s cornerstone, and he was a member of Holy Angels/Holy Spirit Parish his entire life. He supported his family in their faith endeavors, including crafting each of his nieces and nephews rosaries for their First Holy Communion. And his support extended to the community; he donated his jewelry and rosaries for fundraisers and coordinated a family-sponsored Sunday Supper for the parish each year. In 2021, Rollie became a member of St. Joseph Fraternity Order of Franciscan Seculars to deepen his faith life.

He is survived by four sisters and two brothers: Chuck and Rita Nelson, John and Debra Probst, Rich and Mary Daczyk, Brian and Ellen Starszak, Theresa Adrian and Jamie Jackson, Joe and Cathi Probst. His nieces and nephews: Aurora Nelson, Erin (Scott) VanHulle (Goddaughter), Katrina (Sam) Pakala, Sarah (John Ploeser) Probst, Melissa (Corey) Carter, Jonathan (Kaila) Probst (Godson), Adam Probst, Danielle (Grady) Stewart, AJ Daczyk, Dylan (Kenzie) Daczyk, Lindsey (Tim) Torbeck, April (Todd) Vosters, David Starszak, Garret Adrian, Ellie Probst and Michael Sugden, and Ben Probst and Autumn Hull. Great-nieces and nephews: Isabella and Elliana Bynoe; Liam, Penelope, and Lawrence Pakala; Blake Ringler; Amelia and Charli Probst; Victoria, Camilla, and Sophia Stewart; Emma and Hank Daczyk; Nathan and Claire Torbeck; Asher, Peter, and Joseph Vosters. Close friends: Karen Davidson, Carol and Matt Stevenson and family, Rob and Michelle Serwas and family, Angie and Brittany (Goddaughter) Serwas, Eric and son Zak (Godson) Kellsvig.

Rollie is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Leon Probst; and his great-niece, Eleanor Pakala.

Visitation will be held Saturday, August 19, 2023 at HOLY SPIRIT PARISH – DARBOY CHURCH (W2796 County Road KK, Appleton) from 9:00 a.m. until Mass at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Carl Schmitt will officiate. Inurnment at Holy Angels Cemetery.

Ronald Van Asten Obituary
Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 19, 2024
Ronald Van Asten Obituary Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 19, 2024
It is with shock and great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ronald "Ron/Ronnie" W. Van Asten, of Burnsville, MN, on March 25, 2024, at the age of 82.

A beloved son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

Ron was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, in June of 1941. He and his four siblings were raised in nearby Neenah. He was proud of his Dutch and German heritage and was a true "ambassador" for the state of Wisconsin, the cities of the Fox River Valley, and his cherished Green Bay Packers. If you knew Ron at some point you would learn of all and any of the products and noted people who came from this area.

Ron had many talents and interests. He loved learning and was always reading The Wall Street Journal, National Geographic, trade periodicals, and anything related to science, mechanics, electronics, and politics. He was a very funny and social person. His favorite way to spend his time, as he would say, was to "just sit around and bullsh*t with people", play cribbage or cards (especially Sheep's Head, a family favorite), and travel. Ron also had a life-long love of music. Whether listening to a live band at the State Fair or through his Bose stereo in the living room, Ron was always around music: from "old school" WI polka to FM 88.5's "Bluegrass Saturday Mornings", Elvis's gospel to 50's rock, Creedence Clearwater Revival to traditional country, and classical. Among his favorites were Kris Kristofferson's musical poetry, Hank Williams, Sr., Buddy Holly, Sam Cooke, and Tchaikovsky.

Ron's childhood was not an easy one. He was 2 years old when his father deserted the family, leaving his mother, Ella (Kuhn) Van Asten, to raise five young children by herself. A very talented seamstress, she worked to support the family, but making ends meet was nearly impossible, and the welfare system as we know it today had not yet been developed. More than once the Methodist church and The Salvation Army stepped in to help. At one point, Ella was in a serious car accident that left her in critical condition and in a coma for over a month. All five children had to be dispersed to different family members. Ron was placed with his grandmother Kuhn until his mother could fully recover and bring them all back together under one roof.

One year, returning home from summer camp, Ron learned that his mother couldn't keep their house or his beloved dog, Chubby. Ella took a job at Robert Hall (a noted men's suite store) in Milwaukee, but only Ron and his younger sister moved with his mom. Being separated once again from his older brothers and sisters was very hard on him, and his eldest brother became somewhat of a father figure to him.

Throughout his childhood, however, Ron displayed significant talent and possessed a knack for electronics and mechanics, often fixing (and disassembling!) things...toasters, blenders, radios, you name it. He even maintained his mom's sewing machine so she could continue working. He was always curious to know how things worked. On his own, Ron ordered, paid for, and assembled a Heath Kit (an electronic radio assembly kit). He also rewired the electricity in the family home at age 12!

It was a challenging neighborhood where they lived. Ron and a friend dreamed of running away and having a life like Davy Crockett, they even started making plans. However, Ronnie and this friend, while playing with a chemistry set, accidentally started an old, abandoned building on fire. Ron always had a big heart, but this unfortunate and unintentional mishap was "the final straw" prompting a tough decision. Ronnie could either go to reform school or go live and work at a local family farm. He chose the farm. It was hard work, but he enjoyed it.

Ron moved and switched schools frequently throughout his upbringing, including every year between 7th and 12th grade. During high school, he worked 6 pm-10 pm every day (except Sundays) setting pins at the bowling alley. Ron was never one to complain, and though his 'difficult childhood' is only being touched on, it was these very circumstances, along with his "bullheaded" mindset and unusually gifted intelligence that led him to become the strong, independent, hard-working, and determined man that he became. "No pain, no gain" was his motto, and on he went.

Ron initially dropped out of high school (later earning his G.E.D.) but was uncertain of what to do next. Loving his country and always fascinated with aeronautics, he decided to apply to the U.S. Air Force. Ron aced every single aptitude test, scoring 100% on each one, except for the administration/clerical test (not his forte, shall we say). The Air Force Officer in charge was so impressed with Ron's capabilities that he wrote a letter on his behalf, fast-tracking him into the new and flourishing computer division of the U.S. Air Force for further training and education.

A long and excellent career at Control Data Corporation (CDC) soon followed. He and an Air Force buddy both wound up at CDC, in the Minneapolis, MN division and shared an apartment together right off Lake Harriet. He loved his time at CDC working as a Senior Tech Field Engineer, traveling all over, troubleshooting, and repairing large computer systems at various sites, with long-term assignments in Toronto, California, Florida, and Texas.

Some of the mainframes and supercomputers Ron worked on literally took up whole rooms. He talked of being assigned to service calls, sometimes by himself, where he was simply shown the large 'computer room' and told, "It stopped working." Too daunting for many, this situation is where Ron thrived. Diving in with his whip-smarts, binary thinking, and great deductive reasoning he would surface having figured out the elusive problem(s).

During this time, he also met and married Judy (Cline) and they had three children together: Stephanie, Lisa, and Jim. Though he and Judy would later divorce, they always maintained a life-long friendship. Family was very important to Ron, and he was very proud of his children.

After leaving CDC Ron established his own business, Electronic Devices, Inc. (EDI), located in Richfield, MN, where he held the position of president and chief purchasing agent. EDI was a computer systems integrator and built a line of high-performance computer systems for consumers and business use. The company's tagline was, "We serve what they sold you." EDI thrived through the 'blood, sweat, and tears' of Ron and one of his most dedicated and bright employees, Jeff Willeck. Jeff would later become Ron's right-hand man in the business and a close friendship ensued. Owning a business suited Ron as he worked hard and didn't like reporting to a manager. He loved people and sales. Ron often had multiple customers buzzing around the office as he figured out the necessary specs needed for a successful solution. He was in his element. After an impressive 10-year stint, and a little soul searching, Ron decided to sell EDI and slowly move toward fulfilling his retirement dreams.

In 1994, Ron met Pam White and they were partners for over 20 years. In addition to many adventures together, they enjoyed dancing and being season ticket holders to local theater and music venues, including Ordway, Guthrie, Orchestra Hall, and The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Ron, semi-retired at this point, worked part-time as a school bus driver at First Student and later the Bloomington, MN, School District. Being the "biggest kid on the block" himself, it's easy to imagine how the school kids loved him! Working part-time allowed Ron and Pam to travel, something they really enjoyed. They flew to many different and interesting countries around the world, including visiting Ron's ancestral roots in the Netherlands and Germany.

In 2021 Ron purchased and moved into a condo within a senior living community in Burnsville, MN, where he enjoyed many new friends and social activities. Ever active, Ron was always doing something, including renting out his properties, dabbling in the trade market, reading up on the latest scientific advancements and current events, and meeting up with his kids/family for the many birthdays, holidays, and celebrations. It's especially comforting to know Ron spent the last month of his life, in Mazatlán, Mexico, with some people very dear to him, including his nephew, Scot and wife, Vicky, and Pam, with whom he always remained close.

Ron was a forthright, fun-loving, and quick-witted person. He talked tough, very fast, and often without a filter, but he was a sensitive man who was loyal, honest, principled, and always rooted for the "underdog." Whenever he spoke it was with a wry humor and always with a twinkle in his eye. Ron in-and-of himself was an experience; 'to know him was to love him.' He will be greatly missed.

Ron is preceded in death by his mother, Ella; brothers Virgil and Guy; brothers-in-law Mike Dorow and Jim Kneifl; sister-in-law Janet; and nephew, Dean.

Ron is survived by his children: Stephanie (Eric), Lisa, and Jim (Denise); grandchildren: Liam, Xander, and Keagan; sisters Charlotte Dorow and Darlene Kneifl; sister-in-law Jackie; many nieces and nephews; (former wife/friend) Judy (Myles) Johnson; (former partner/friend) Pam White (Robert), along with Laura (Robert) & Aidan Menne; as well as many dear friends he adored and considered family. A great man who lived a good and fulfilling life.

A Celebration of Life will be held, details forthcoming. Contributions in his memory can be made to The Salvation Army. A charity organization that provided great help during Ron's upbringing and to whom he 'gave back' and supported throughout his life.

Ronnie (Buck) Fairchild, age 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 17, 2022, at Country Villa in Little Chute. He was born on September 26, 1936 to the late Emma and Flavous Fairchild. He graduated from Appleton West High School in 1954.

Buck went on to meet the love of his life, his best friend, Mary Lou; and made her his forever fishing partner on September 15, 1959.

He was drafted in 1959 to the United States Army. He served in Korea for 12 months and was recalled to serve during the Berlin Crisis where he served 6 more months at Fort Carson in Colorado. After his time of service, Buck was employed at Kimberly Clark Paper Mill until 1976. He started in Combined Locks post office and later went to Green Bay as a postal carrier and finished his career at the Kaukauna post office in 1996.

Buck was an avid fisherman. He spent the next 16 years on the water with his greatest catch, Mary Lou, reeling in perch and walleyes. First at Lac View Desert then to Lake Gogebic in Michigan. Only extremely bad weather could keep Buck out of the boat. He was a dedicated sports fan, never missing a Brewers, Packers, or Badger game. If the game wasn’t on TV, he was listening to it on the radio.

No one loved his kids and grandkids more than Buck. He was in the stands near and far for every sporting event they participated in and was their biggest fan. He had a deep love for baseball as he played, coached, and was an umpire.

Buck is survived by his wife Mary Lou and his three children; Scott (Sue) Fairchild, Stacey (Jeff) Thein, and Ronnie (Jeni) Fairchild. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Logan (Jackie) Thein, Luke (Carolyn) Thein, Lexi (Drake) Owenby, Chase Fairchild, Amanda (Chris) Belville, and Tammy Keen (Dan Steidl). And his great-grandchildren; Atticus & Ezra Thein, River Owenby, and Easton, Kenlyn, and Amara Belville. Buck was also survived by his sister-in-laws; Irene Tiedemann, Joyce Mader, Carol (Tom) Bogenschutz, and Mary Fairchild. And his brother-in-laws; Bernie Van Roy, Hank (Jan) Peerenboom, Jim (Pat) Peerenboom, and Tom (Sheri) Peerenboom. He is further survived by many nephews, nieces, and other relatives.

Buck is preceded in death by his siblings; Jack Fairchild, Mary (Harold) Perrault, Wanda Fairchild, Judy (Gene) Kaddatz, Omeida (Bill) Tordoer, and Peggy Holcomb. And sister-in-laws; Marlene Peerenboom, Marge Peerenboom, Rita Van Roy, and Barbara Peerenboom.

A special thank you to the wonderful and caring staff at Country Villa Memory Care in Little Chute. To know Buck was to love him and to have loved him was to be one of the lucky ones.

Grandpa, we look so fondly upon our childhood because so many of those memories were with you. Thank you for being there, for supporting us, for loving us, and for showing us the power of kindness and patience. We promise we will try to keep Grandma Beego out of trouble as best we can for you, and when we inevitably fail, we will lovingly roll our eyes, just as you did so many times! We know you’ll be in Heaven cheering on all your great-grandkids in all that they do, and we will be right here cheering with you for those dang Brewers to FINALLY win us that World Series! Love you Grandpa Bucko - Your Grandchildren

To honor Buck’s wishes, his immediate family will be having a private celebration of his life.

“I pray that I may live to fish until my dying day. And when it comes to my last cast, I then most humbly pray: when in the Lord’s great landing net and peacefully asleep; That in his mercy I be judged ‘Big enough to keep.’

Rudolph Merbach Jr.
July 13, 1935 ~ June 29, 2023 (age 87)
Rudolph Merbach Jr. July 13, 1935 ~ June 29, 2023 (age 87)
Rudolph Merbach Jr., July 13, 1935 - June 29, 2023, passed away peacefully at his home at Eagle Point in Appleton, Wisconsin surrounded by his loving wife, family, and caregivers.

Rudy was born in Appleton, Wisconsin on July 13, 1935, to Rudolph and Geneva (Kanter) Merbach. The eldest of 4 brothers, Rudy exceled in sports and was popular with his classmates. He spotted Elaine, his wife of 66 years at the Brillion homecoming dance and although she wasn’t his date, he was determined that they would be together. They were married on July 27, 1957 and raised their family in Kaukauna. It is this determination and resilience that guided Rudy’s life and career. He was an example to all who knew him.

After joining the United States Army (1955-1957) Rudy returned to the Fox Valley and began his career at Thilmany Pulp and Paper. He was promoted to a wide variety of roles across the company and his final assignment took him to several states where he oversaw the implementation of new converter technology projects across the US.

Rudy always seemed to be in the right place at the right time, as a snowstorm prevented him from getting on a plane that was eventually hijacked to Cuba. He had lots of stories and expertly managed difficult work-related situations, but those who knew Rudy knew his temperament and ease with people put him in position to calm any situation and resolve it to everyone’s benefit.

While working and living in Kaukauna, Rudy was involved in several community related boards and organizations. He served as a local Junior Achievement Club Advisor, the Thilmany Management Club Board, the Trinity Lutheran Church Board as President and Secretary, a Director and Vice President of the Kaukauna Athletic Club, and Vice President of the Kaukauna Police and Fire Commission and a United Fund solicitor.

In between work, family events, as well as his involvement in the community and his church, Rudy squeezed in hunting trips with his brothers (Robert, Ronnie and Dick) and his sons (Steve and John) up at the cabin in Fence, Wisconsin. The cabin served as a weekend getaway for friends and family alike. He was particularly happy when his youngest brother Dick came to him with a proposal to upgrade the cabin—the result was a lodge that was big enough for the entire extended family. He engaged his friends to build the lodge, and the field stone fireplace was almost big enough to stand in. Rudy never did anything half-way. Many Christmas holidays and family celebrations were shared there and at the family home on Lake Winnebago, with daughters Shelly and Susan in charge of the dinner menu. Rudy presided over many late-night games of Sheepshead where he was surrounded by his family, lots of laughter and shenanigans. These stories and memories are now part of his legacy.

After retiring in 1993, Rudy and Elaine built their forever home on Lake Winnebago, and Rudy redirected his community involvement, joining the Stockbridge Village Board as a Trustee, and as a Director and Secretary of the Stockbridge Fishing Club. St. Catherine’s Bay was ground zero for the “Blue Fox”— his fishing moniker. He fished at sunrise and sunset and shared his love of fishing with his children and grandchildren. He had a special spot in the garage where the catch of the day was prepared for the freezer, and he always shared his abundance of walleye and perch with all his friends, family, and neighbors -- but never disclosed his lucky fishing spots. Even in his last months at Eagle Point, Rudy enjoyed watching the young fisherman outside his window as they fished on the Fox River.

Rudy was a proud father, grandpa, and great grandpa. He would FaceTime with all the family members and enjoyed hearing how each of the grandchildren were doing in school, sports, and work. He was very proud of their successes and always followed their accomplishments from afar.

Rudy was a man of strong faith and put his trust in God. As his health worsened, he was buoyed by the ministerial visits from Trinity Lutheran. It was his strong faith that pushed him to fight back after the first of many cancer diagnoses. And fight back he did, even after multiple procedures and surgeries. In the end, he won that battle, but his body was tired, and after saying goodbye to his siblings, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they visited over the last weeks, he left this world on his terms with Elaine by his side.

Rudy is survived by an incredibly large circle of friends and family that he touched over the past 87 years: Elaine, his wife of 65 years; children: Susan Palm (Jim), Steven Merbach (Joy), John Merbach (Teresa), Shelly Magnuson (Rob); grandchildren: Mandy Nackers (Adam), Katie Merbach, Greg Palm (Hannah), Molly Palm (Ali), Thomas Magnuson, Ellie Magnuson and Mark Magnuson; great grandchildren: Gregory, Nataly and Rudy Nackers and Wyatt Palm; and siblings: Robert Merbach, deceased (Betty), Ron Merbach (Muriel), and Richard Merbach (Pati). Siblings of Elaine Merbach include: Bette Schomisch (deceased), Bruce Schomisch (deceased), Wayne Schomisch (deceased) and Lois Schomisch Herman (Romy).

A celebration of Rudy’s incredible life will be held on Friday July 14, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 804 Grignon Street, Kaukauna. Visitation will begin at the church at 11:00 a.m. and will continue until the time of the service with lunch to follow. For online condolences, please visit www.verkuilenfh.com.

Memorials may be directed to the Volunteer Fire Department, Stockbridge, WI.

Sharon A. Vander Velden Nov 15, 1955 — Sep 6, 2023 Kimberly
Sharon “Sharry” A. Vander Velden went to be with her Heavenly Father on September 6, 2023, at home after being diagnosed with COPD.

Sharry was born November 15, 1955, to Jacob and Florence Lamers. She grew up with loving parents, eight siblings who she adored and graduated from Kimberly High School. Her greatest joy was her family and being a homemaker while watching her three boys grow up. She later found great pleasure and purpose in her work at the local homeless shelter and enjoying time with her grandchildren.

The beauty of nature always brought her peace, and she loved gardening and being outdoors. She especially loved going for rides in the fall to see the leaves change colors. One of her favorite seasonal traditions was seeing her grandchildren’s Halloween costumes each year. Early on, Sharry looked forward to vacations at Robert’s Lake, fishing and enjoying time with friends and family there. Her enthusiasm for cooking for loved ones inspired her to create many delicious family recipes.

Sharry is survived by her sons Jake (Bre) Vander Velden, Clayton (Sara) Vander Velden, and Ross Vander Velden; along with her grandchildren, Collin, Alec, Leo, Aven, Livie, and Ellie. She is also survived by her siblings Judy (Dennis) Schumacher, Diane (Pat) Piette, Al (Debbie) Lamers, Chris (Jean) Lamers, Tracey (Denise Kander) Lamers, and sisters in law Nancy Oast-Lamers, and Mary Lamers. There are also many other relatives and dear friends.

Sharry was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob, and Florence Lamers, brothers Mike Lamers, Jim Lamers, and Ralph (Sam) Lamers, as well as Jim Vander Velden, the father of Sharry’s kids.

She loved her family dearly and they were everything to her. She thought about them often, and they were always in her heart. She cherished her boys, grandchildren, and siblings. She enjoyed spending time with them when she was able. She knew she was loved, and we knew she loved us whole-heartedly too.

Sharry leaves a legacy of love and compassion. She taught us to love people where they are at with acceptance and free of judgement. We take comfort in knowing Sharry is at peace with Jesus her lord and Savior in heaven. We will always cherish the memories we have had throughout the years.

Visitation will be from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM on Friday, September 15, 2023, at Jansen Fargo Funeral Home, located at 204 East Kimberly Avenue in Kimberly. The celebration of life service will begin at 4:00 PM with a fellowship to follow. Pastor John Slotten will be presiding.
