Raymond Wiater (Ray) age 89 of Appleton, WI passed away comfortably and peacefully Wednesday, June 14th 2023, surrounded by his children. Ray was born on August 10th 1933 in Milwaukee, WI, son of the late Leo and Bernice (Dolata) Wiater. Ray's grandparents were Polish immigrants who traveled from Europe through Ellis Island to Illinois, eventually settling in Eastern Wisconsin. Ray's father, Leo, who grew up in Pulaski then moved at the age of 21 to Milwaukee where he met and married Ray's mother Bernice while working at American Motors Co. as an upholsterer. Together they had two sons, Bernard and younger brother Raymond. The Wiater family resided on the south side of Milwaukee in the Polonia neighborhood just below the Historic Third Ward. Until they entered grade school at St. Paul Catholic School, neither Ray nor Bernard spoke English. Throughout his early years, Ray was very fond of family gatherings during the holidays where Bernard would often play the concertina. Family reunions also became a tradition as his family grew larger. Kielbasa is a traditional Polish Easter meal and Ray enjoyed both delicious Polish cuisine as well as his Mother's homemade meatloaf, mashed potatoes with gravy and rice pudding with raisins. After high school, Ray joined the United States Air Force serving our country from 1953 to 1956. After completing basic training in both MS and TX, Ray's rank was Airman Second Class. He served with the 602nd AC&W Squadron in Birkenfeld, Germany during the Korean War Era. After serving 4 years in the military, Ray stayed on in the National Guard while working construction in the Fox Valley area before embarking towards a career in radio.

Ray acquired his education and radio acumen through correspondence courses in journalism at UW-Madison and attendance at the former Brown Institute in Minneapolis, MN. Ray began his radio career in early 1960 at WFAW in Fort Atkinson, WI, moving to WBEV in Beaver Dam, WI In June 1960, reporting news, sports casting, and maybe spun a 45-rpm record or two. In 1967, he moved on to WDUX in Waupaca, WI. In 1968, Ray assumed the News Director’s post at WDLB radio in Marshfield, WI which is where he formed a lifelong friendship with station manager John "Jack" Hackman. Lastly, Ray found his home in Appleton, WI landing his dream job in 1973 as News Director once again, at WHBY-AM 1230. He was hired by Lew Process and served under numerous station managers including Susan Knaack, finishing his career under the impeccably honorable Greg Bell, VP of Woodward Radio Group. WHBY’s call sign stands for “Where Happy Boys Yodel”!

Among the many honors Ray received during his radio career was induction into the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in June of 2002, one of his greatest achievements. He left an indelible and lasting mark on Wisconsin radio with everyone he touched professionally along the way. During his "The Dean of Fox Valley News" career, Ray was also honored by the Associated Press and the Northeast Broadcast News Association for his news casting. Along with his "day job", Ray helped to establish the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association tradition of statewide broadcast of political debates. He served on a panel of broadcast journalist for the Association’s first U.S. Senate Debate in 1992 and the Executive Board of the Associated Press. In 1984 Ray received the prestigious Carol Brewer Award. Ray once said, "The only thing that we have to sell as a news person is trust, credibility and honesty". Ray was a stickler for details; the who, what, why, when, and where were his basis of honest unbiased reporting. Ray proudly served that role for over 54 years, 41 of them at WHBY. His retirement from full time at WHBY was October 6, 2006 at which then Mayor Tim Hanna proclaimed it to be “Ray Waiter Day” to the City of Appleton. His final retirement after going part-time was December 31st of 2014.

Throughout Ray's career, he met many people and had a vast number of associates that are too numerous to count. Being that Ray spent most of his years in Appleton, it's important to recognize some of his most notable colleagues from WHBY as follows; Bob Lloyd, Tom Hamilton, Steve True, Ellen Kort, Mike Diamond, Jim Choudoir, Julie Pesch, Jeanne Anthony, Ed Walters, Bill Day (Walter Kalata), Bob Salm, Sandi Schmidt, Dave Edwards and Kathy Kuene. As News Director, Ray was authorized to hire staff at his discretion. Most notable hires were Miles Knuteson, Gretchen Ehlke and Len Nelson. Under Ray's watchful eye, they began their tutelage and all are forever grateful for his gentle mentoring. Ray also had several contacts and developed friendships with those in newsprint at the Post Crescent including Dan Flannery, Bernie Kemps, Bill Knutson and Arlen Boardman. Ray treasured all his friendships but especially his two dearest friends, Steve Brown of 30 plus years as well as Jim Fisher of 53 plus years, who were also part of Ray's WHBY entourage. We would like to thank Jonathan Krause for authoring the initial WHBY tribute to Ray Wiater on WHBY's website that has gone viral. Thank you all for being his most trusted and reliable confidants. As children we remember visiting both the Art Deco building in the flats near Lawe St. where WHBY first existed in Appleton and then their new location on Radio Rd. We were amazed by the constant clatter of the AP Teletype machine with news stories from around the world when the paper would be torn off the Teletype to be read live on air.

While employed and after retirement, Ray had many interests that filled his days. Family was first and foremost in his life. Ray devoted himself to his family, Catholic faith, and community. Ray was a kind, caring and loving soul. His great sense of humor and outgoing personality made him a lot of friends along his path as well as an excellent reporter. Ray never quit giving his best to all who knew him, nor did he stop moving. Ray thoroughly enjoyed health, fitness and was a familiar face at Appleton's YMCA. Ray prided himself at being an avid runner completing full marathons and later half marathons until the age of 81. He won medals for his age group! Some of his many hobbies included freelance writing, poetry and photography. Ray also enjoyed reading, dry roasted peanuts, watching the Green Bay Packers, nature in full bloom and his favorite color was purple, of course! Ray was dedicated to his Catholic upbringing and a longtime member of St. Joseph's Church in Appleton, WI. Ray happily volunteered his time at both the Emergency Shelter and St. Elizabeth's Hospital where he was known as the ambassador of the 4th floor Fremont tower at Ascension Health. When Ray passed away Ascension Health gave him great care, especially Angela, who cared for him until the end.

Ray married Eloise Jeske June 11th, 1960, and together they had four children. Ray was preceded in death by his parents Leo, Bernice, a brother Bernard "Sam" Wiater, and the mother of his children, Eloise Seif. Ray is survived by his children Scott (Candy) Wiater of Appleton, Laura Hermann of Combined Locks, Steve Wiater of Greenville and Stacy Wiater (Mark) of Black Creek; grandchildren Kasi, Justin, Ella, Lila and Sean; great-grandchildren Elliott, Kennedy and Hunter.

The funeral liturgy for Ray will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, June 26, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, located at 410 W. Lawrence Street in Appleton, with Br. Ray Stadmeyer officiating. Ray will be laid to rest with full military honors at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will take place at the church on Monday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of the mass.

In honor of Ray's favorite color, please feel free to wear something purple to the service.

teve Lemmers, 91, unexpectedly left to meet and probably interrogate his maker on May 25, 2023. Steve was an intelligent, caring, and witty man. He loved people and loved life intensely.

He played basketball, football, baseball, and did track and field at Kimberly High School. He held the school pole vaulting record for many years after graduation. He attended and played football at Marquette University, Michigan State University, and the University of Colorado Boulder, graduating with a degree in Journalism and Public Relations. He loved to ski and had plenty of opportunities to do so when he and Joan lived in Colorado. He served his country in the Army during the Korean War, interrupting his college years. After working for several other companies, he started his own advertising business in 1980 and enjoyed having the freedom to fish for part of the day and work for part of the day.

He was an expert angler and fished into his 80s. He had to paint his boat a different color on each side to confuse the other fisherman on Lake Winnebago who were looking for his favorite fishing spots.

Steve loved a good project and those who knew him will remember his ever ready supply of duct tape, hangers, nail polish, and masking tape to be deployed at a moment's notice to fix something.

He was a voracious reader, and he still read USA Today from cover to cover every day and completed the crossword puzzle diligently. He loved language and writing, and often composed haiku for special occasions. He was an excellent photographer and captured family pictures at gatherings in addition to his nature photography.

Steve was born on February 6, 1932. He was the son of Theodore and Elizabeth (Lamers) Lemmers. He grew up in Kimberly, Wisconsin with his siblings Agnes, Ethel, Doris, Tom, Ron, and Leo. He married Joan (Busch) Lemmers on August 18, 1956 and they spent 42 years together until she passed away in 1998. They traveled to Aruba, Puerto Rico, and Portugal when he was working for a travel agency early in their marriage and enjoyed family vacations at Moshawquit Lake. He leaves behind his children Diane (Randy) Feldt, Jeanine Lemmers (Lloyd Waldron), and Luke (Tracie) Lemmers; grandchildren Alyson (Herpao Vang) Blom, Lizz (Nate) Wright, Kate Feldt, Anna Feldt, Ashley Stewart, Leah Lemmers, Emma Lemmers, and Logan Lemmers; great grandchildren Eamonn Wright, Ayden Vang, Lylliana Vang and Jozelyn Vang.

He found love again after Joan‘s death and married Betty (Knuppel) Lemmers on November 3, 2001. He leaves behind Lisa (Dean) Olejniczak, Jill (Tom) Goodsett, Keith (Aimee) Knuppel; grandchildren Hannah (Mason) Ballweg, Ross Olejniczak, Morgan Hanzel, Maddie Hanzel, Sawyer Knuppel, and Chloe Knuppel.

Steve lived at Hart Park Square in Wauwatosa for the last few years and leaves behind many friends on the staff and among the residents. Special thanks to the resident assistants and receptionists for their tender loving care of Steve. He will also be missed by the flock of birds who frequent his veranda for their daily suet fix.

Steve touched the lives of so many people throughout his lifetime and will be greatly missed. We will remember Steve for his charm, wit, and outgoing nature. We will try to emulate his zest for life and find joy in the everyday occurrences that we often take for granted.

She was known to tear up a dance floor with polka at a wedding. She loved vacations in the warm sun and making memories with her friends. Frequent friend and neighborhood dinners were once a highlight to her; and while she did not partake much in the cooking, she was excellent at socializing and making sure everyone had their fill of laughs. Above all, she was a devoted mother and wife; always caring and sacrificing for her family. She encouraged her girls and was their biggest supporter in sports, hobbies, academics, and life goals. Dementia is not a road for the weary, and it would be an impossible journey to walk alone. We are grateful and will forever be indebted to our friends and neighbors, who still visited frequently, kept extending invites, and shared in our grief along the way. We are also thankful for local restaurants and businesses who understood her disease and welcomed her and treated her like any other customer, even if accommodations had to be made. Lastly, we want to thank her caregivers, as well as Thedacare Hospice, especially Lexie, for your support and compassion and the entire Valley VNA staff, especially Jordan, for your kindness and making Kris’s final days comfortable.

Per Kris’s wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when we can share our favorite memories.

I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.
I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun;
Of happy memories that I leave when life is done.

Patricia L. (Hurley) Schabo age 84, passed away Monday, May 22, 2023 at her home of 58 years in Appleton. She was born on March 10, 1939 to Don and Grace (Otto) Hurley. Preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald E. Schabo, and brother Michael P. Hurley. With whom, in a stroke of Irish luck, she shared a birthday though 22 years apart.

Pat grew up in Appleton attending St. Mary Grade School Appleton and St. Mary’s High School in Menasha. After school she began working at Miller Electric. She and Don Schabo then married on April 24, 1965 and moved into what became the hub of gatherings for friends and family, which it remains to this day. The two of them were able to spend 53 wonderful years together at this home.

Pat enjoyed many good times with family and friends. She loved supporting her children and grandchildren in all their activities. Whether this was football, basketball, tennis, baseball, volleyball, soccer, or hockey she wanted to be a part of the excitement. Her children and grandchildren were her greatest joys. Her only granddaughter christened her “Darey” almost 30 years ago. That name has stuck with her ever since.

Her second greatest joy was camping. Anyone in the family will attribute their love of camping to Pat and Don. It began in the 60’s when they took a tent with Pat’s younger siblings. This love was passed down to their children, grandchildren, and the siblings’ families and switched to travel trailers as time went on. After retiring from Winch Financial, Pat and Don enjoyed spending their summers visiting their favorite campgrounds at Franklin Lake in Eagle River, Peninsula State Park in Door County, and Upper Michigan with family and great friends; Behrens and Goszs.

There was nothing better than holidays at the Schabo’s. Pat always made sure there were plenty of snacks and sweets (her personal favorites: Hurley Dip, Chex mix, cut-out cookies, and Special K bars). Since everyone piled into the kitchen, you would be warned to stay out of her corner. Once that was cleaned up; let the card playing begin. She hated to lose, but always had a good laugh with whoever she was playing with.

Pat is survived by her three children: Rick (JaTame) Schabo, Appleton, Ann (Lucas Roman) Schabo, St. Paul, MN, and Kris (Tony) Kappell, Appleton; five grandchildren: Sage and Charlie Schabo, Sam and Ben Kappell, and Alex Roman; Sisters: Marlene Dion, Susan Dailey, and Kelly (Tim) Robertson all of Appleton; Brother Don (Kuni) Hurley, NJ; Sister-in-law: Deanna Hurley; Sister-in-law: Carol (Fran) Sturm; Brothers-in-law: Bob (Judy) Schabo; Bill Schabo; Pat is further survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Thank you Darey for loving us with such a big heart. We all love you so much, and know that you are with dad and Michael having a laugh, watching us from above. Until we meet again.

Family and friends may gather at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 312 S State St., Appleton on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 from 4:00 pm until 5:00 pm with the Funeral Mass to be held at 5:00 pm, Fr. Bill Swichtenberg officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Mary Parish Appleton for the Michael Hurley Scholarship Fund.

A whirlwind of corporate moves took her to Chicago, where the couple's first son, David Straten Remmert, was born, and then Houston, where she gave birth to Stephen James Remmert. With her three men in tow, Donna moved to Japan, Chappaqua, N.Y., back to Houston, then to Darien, Conn., where her sons graduated high school.
Then it was back to Houston, where her husband retired, then Austin, Tex., before settling in Boulder, where their son Stephen and his wife Sarah (Kitchener) were raising their beloved granddaughter, Grace. When David moved to Boulder and married Angelyn (Emmons), Donna inherited three new grandchildren, Michael Elizabeth, Conner, and Sophia.
Surrounded by family and an ever-growing circle of friends, Donna published three volumes of memoirs chronicling her younger years and testifying to the free and loving spirit she became. Surrounded by love, she moved gracefully into her elder years and pursued her lifelong passion for dream work and famed psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung. Donna lived a remarkable, rewarding life of travel, thought, and family that she unselfishly shared with all.
She is survived by her husband, sons and grandchildren; brothers Jim and Terry (Vicki); sisters Joan Laffey, Bonnie Babcock, Pat Eick and Marie (Frank) Walsh; and many dear nieces and nephews who were always fond of her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister-in-law Pat Van Straten; and brothers-in-law James Laffey, Rodger Roloff, James Babcock and James Eick.

It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of our little sister, Cynthia "Cindy" L. Duncan (Schiltz), age 52 of Little Chute, WI. Cindy was born on June 21, 1970 and left us on June 12, 2023 after a quick, but very courageous battle with cancer. Cindy was a very kind, loving soul who enjoyed the simple things in life, especially camping with family and friends, helping others, being a prankster at times (especially with her big "bro in law", Chris) and enjoying a cold beer.

Until the end, Cindy was still her spunky self, even giving her husband Bill some "smack talk" while still being in pain. We will all greatly miss her smile and adventuresome spirit. But now, we are grateful that she knows what it's like to be genuinely unbound without disease, pain, or treatment. Cindy's passing has left a hole in our hearts, but we are all better people for having loved her and having been loved by her.

Cindy leaves behind a loving husband, Bill who took the greatest care of her during her struggle and 2 wonderful sons, Kyle (Amber) Schiltz and Victor (Bree) Duncan and 1 beautiful grandson, Liam Duncan whom she loved dearly. She was affectionately known to Liam as his "Mo Ma". She is also survived by her father, Leslie Schiltz, Shiocton and siblings, Brian (Kathy) Schiltz, Freedom, WI, Laura (David) Huerta, Tucson, AZ and Patti (Dan) Rozinski of Appleton, WI. Bonus sisters & brother, Cindy Gillespie (Florida), Jon (Wanda) Gillespie (Neilsville, WI), & Jayne (Sam) Carroll, Gresham, WI. Her in-laws, Vic (Jean) DeBruin, Dawn (Art) Malcom, Laura (Chris) Van Veghel, Shannon Pomerey, Tammy (Dan) Wiegand and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her mother & stepfather, Ralph & Lee Gillespie, maternal grandmother, Regina Wheeler, and paternal grandparents, John & Arlene Schiltz. Also preceding her were many family members whom she loved and will now be reuniting with.

The family would like to thank Dr. Abbi and Dr. Winkler of St. Elizabeth Hospital as well as all the 4th floor nurses who helped her, especially Hailey & Nikki. We appreciate everything you did for our Cindy during this struggle. We would also like to thank the wonderful and caring hospice staff of Moments Hospice, especially Kris, Megan, Melissa & Micki. Your 24/7 care of Cindy went above and beyond, and you are all angels for what you do! It definitely takes a special person to be a caregiver and you are all so special and appreciated! We would also like to thank Cindy's "work family", NEW Printing & Mailing in Appleton who went above and beyond for her for many years! Please, if any of you need any printing jobs done, reach out to Bunny and/or Mark to help you out. Cindy would be proud that you chose them as she was so very proud of everything she did there and loved all her co-workers!. Our family will never forget the calendars she brought to every Christmas gathering that she was so proud that she was a part of making. Thank you everyone from NEW for making her everyday experience fun! She always said she was happy and proud to go to work!

Cindy also had a very special camping group that she often talked about and who affectionately referred to her as "Cindy Lou from Whoville". Thank you Dave & Roberta, Scott & Becky, Chad & Kelly and Kyle & Amanda. Cindy loved her camping adventures and all the "hoopla" that came with it. Cindy asked that all her camping group continue on with her in spirit, having fun and playing pranks on each other with her in mind! Know she is there in spirit and within the fire that you see. She will be there. She loved you all, especially you Bill. You were her deep and everlasting love. Know that she told us sisters that and we love you as well. You will always be considered our family.

Per Cindy's wishes, there will be no funeral. She wishes a Celebration of Life which will be held on July 8, 2023 from 1pm to 8pm at the Town of Vandenbroek Town Hall located at W2030 County Road JJ, Kaukauna, WI. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Moments Hospice. Their care and compassion for Cindy was nothing short of extraordinary.

Dear Sissy, We hope you are with mom and flying high above the clouds that we loved to watch when we were kids. Hover over that special Willow tree we always talked about (you know the one!). "And forever in my memory the old Willow will be framed". We love you to the moon and back our "Little Blister". Love, Patti & Lori

Hey you! Hey you! My last 5 finger wave to you, Love Brian.

In 1976, he returned to Wisconsin and studied at St. Norbert College in De Pere earning degrees in Sociology and Theology.
During college, he held the positions of Grand Knight and Trustee for the Knights of Columbus for a total of four years. Aware of a priestly vocation since his First Holy Communion, he entered St. Norbert Abbey in his junior year at the college, and was vested as a novice on August 27, 1979.
